Advice on (M)STP settings

Tue Oct 08, 2024 5:13 pm

Hello,

I'm about to re-configure two CRS328 to protect them against network loop.
One CRS328 will act as the root node connected to a firewall gateway.
One CRS328 will act as a leaf node directly connected to the root node.
On the same LAN, I've got a couple of other switches from other vendors, acting as leaf nodes directly connected to the root node.

Some PC or IP Phones are connected to leaf nodes.
A couple of servers are connected to the root node.
These servers are configured to use (M)STP or variants.

I was thinking using:
MSTP, allocating 0x8000 priority to root switch and 0x16000 to leaf nodes.
configuring each bridge port as Edge port except for the port used as trunk ports (for traffic to or from root node).

1. What do think of this setting ? What would you recommend ?

2. How can I best check a port is transitioning from Forwarding to Blocked (or the opposite) ?

Best regards

First off: don't mix different STP modes, they simply don't interwork.

Do you mean, I should exclusively use MSTP on all switches ?

Yes ... either MSTP or RSTP or STP (in this order of preference), which ever is supported by all L2 devices in your network.

OK. I planned to use MSTP, mainly for its VLAN compatibility.
