PPTP no longer working

Tue Nov 05, 2024 9:38 pm

Hey Guys,
Need some help:
I have a couple of locations that I use PPTP on, both behind someone else's network ( they are giving me two LAN IP addresses) but this is a large company and apparently they have started blocking VPN's like PPTP.
My router at the remote location is a Mikrotik RB750gl and my main office router is a Mikrotik 1100AHx4
I tried to setup a L2TP but apparently I would need both public addresses to setup the link and also I can not get access or their admin to allow it.
I thought about using wiregaurd but my RB750 apparently isn't capable of it so that's out.
What else can I do?
Thanks

The writing has been on the wall warning you to get off PPTP for twenty-six years! Before we get to what you should do now that it’s an emergency, would you mind saying why didn’t you act while you still had the ability to use PPTP as a bridge to supported technology?

I can not get…their admin to allow it.

You have a remote tunnel into someone else’s network without admin rights on that network, or the ability to call on one who does? Doesn’t that imply that you should burn these PPTP creds? They don’t want you in there.

L2TP but apparently I would need both public addresses to setup the link

Says who? L2TP is likely the basis of most business-grade “road warrior” schemes in current existence.

wiregaurd but my RB750 apparently isn't capable of it

It is if you upgrade it.

I don't appreciate your freaking attitude, it's not called for.
If you cant just give an option without being an arrogant ass then don't say a damn thing.

No need to get picky, you are on a user forum with professionals. Though they might react a bit direct (as a Dutchman I think they do), they also provide you valuable information. I'll try to be as polite as I can...perhaps you can do the same?

From the post from @tangent:
  • Use L2TP (which works perfeclty fine if you configure it just like road warrior)
  • Use Wireguard (and upgrade your RB750 to RouterOS V7.x)
If VPN is completely blocked, you would have to come up with a different solution.

What is the tunnel used for?
Is there a way to get permission for setting up a tunnel?
Are their alternatives (like using guest network)?

@sambo521: Is your customer really okay with using your own equipment as an in-house, co-located router? TBH, this sounds a bit fishy, especially if it’s a big company that likely already has a remote access VPN solution (probably IPsec-based). I'd recommend using that instead.

If possible, please get back to us with a straightforward and honest answer, and we’ll try to help you out
