Add CAP AX as CAP to RB2011 CapsMan problem

Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:07 pm

Dear All. have a RB2011 router with CapsMan for shared AP CAPs management.
In RouterBoard page:
Model RB2011iL
Revision r3
Firmware Type ar9344
Factory Firmware 6.47.4
Current Firmware 7.11.2
Upgrade Firmware 7.12.1
-----------------------------------------
In Check for Updates page:
Installed Version 7.12.1
Latest Version 7.16.2

I have 2 CAPS for it, which work normally as CAPs.
In RouterBoard page:
Model RBcAPL-2nD
Firmware Type qca9531L
Factory Firmware 6.44
Current Firmware 6.45.9
Upgrade Firmware 7.16.2
--------------------------------------
In Check for Updates page:
Installed Version 7.16.2
Latest Version 7.16.2

I want to add a third AP, type CAP AX
In RouterBoard page:
Model cAPGi-5HaxD2HaxD
Firmware Type ipq6000
Factory Firmware 7.8
Current Firmware 7.8
Upgrade Firmware 7.16.2
--------------------------------------
In Check for Updates page:
Installed Version 7.16.2
Latest Version 7.16.2

I reset this CAP AX for 10 seconds for CapsMan mode and the wifi-qcom package was installed.
The problem is that I can't set this CAP to work with the router. Either there is a problem, or I don't know the procedure.
It would certainly be advisable to unify all firmware versions, but some are said to be old HW and some are new HW and I don't know where the common firmware versions intersect.
According to the indications I found on the forum, it is supposedly necessary to also install the wifi-qcom package on the main RB2011 router to change the CapsMan version from version 1 to version 2, but this is just speculation, is it true? Will the CapsMan version change after installing the package and will the Wifi settings in CapsMan be lost?

The Cap (RBcAPL-2nD) is managed through the old CAPsMAN, while cAP AX is managed through the latest version. Therefor, you will have to run both versions (the latter is available when you upgrade the CAPsMAN device to 7.13.x or above).

Alternatively you can configure the cAP AX manually (instead of being managed through CAPsMAN. Or (best option), ditch the old devices and replace them with new cAP AX's. In that case you still have to upgrade on the (new) CAPsMAN with version 7.13.x or above.

Thanks for the reply. Everything is updated to the latest firmware and I have both versions of Capsman on the router and it works. Will it ever be unified into one version?

No. It seems that MT will just let the legacy wireless CAPsMAN die of old age together with devices running legacy wireless driver.
The main thing of the new wifi CAPsMAN is enhanced mobility (802.11 r/k/v) ... which is not supported by legacy wireless drivers. So apart from common security settings (SSID and PSK) there aren't any other benefits of merging both CAPsMANs. It would be a major PITA for devs to maintain legacy functionality indefinitely and when the time comes to finally retire legacy functions there will be danger of introducing bugs by removing large amount of code.
