IP configuration and Bandwidth manager

Wed Mar 26, 2008 5:03 am

I went through the general install and tried using Winbox to setup the a public IP, on the NIC. Since then, I can not get back into the router through Winbox.
Can someone tell me how to fix this and setup a Public IP side, so I can see this box on the outside?
Best way to secure it, too.
How would I setup another NIC for the private side?
Where is the best place to get started on setting up a Bandwidth manager?

Regards

Use the ROS NIC Mac address instead of the IP address, check settings. There is a problem with NIC IP address, subnet or your configured IP address on your PC !

I'm not sure what do you mean by public side, but if you mean internet network, and you need to access your router from anywhere outside your network, then you have to make sure that you are using Public IP address (And for sure connected to the internet)
In order to setup public side (Public NIC), add NIC IP address, route (gateway) and DNS (if needed).
Best way to secure it, too.
Use firewall rules !
How would I setup another NIC for the private side?
Private, internal network ?
Where is the best place to get started on setting up a Bandwidth manager?
That depends on operated service, pppoe, hotspot, or simple queue

Thanks, I finally got back into my router. What I am trying to do is setup a box to do Bandwidth control of my current DSL customer. I have a machine with 2 NICs. I have put a public IP in one and a private in the other. I am not sure if I even have the service install to do this either.

I am a novice at this and would like any suggestions on training for this too.

Hi braincellbuster,

You are almost done for simple configuration.

Using winbox, you need to add a route (Gateway): IP>>ROUTE>> add gateway
& DNS: IP >> DNS >> Settings (configure the Primary and Secondary DNS)

Any user on the same network, is able to use the Mikrotik router as a gateway now. But speed is unlimited.

To apply bandwidth management (workstations bandwidth control), you can do that from Queues >> Add.

When that is done, add bridge (optional: allow connecting the internal network users with the external network if exist) and arp-reply rule (optional, not to allow anybody to use the gateway, only allowed workstations with specific MAC address).

You can find more info using the manuals: http://www.mikrotik.com/testdocs/ros/2.9/

Best Regards,
Alaa
