What about PowerRouter Serie 2000?

Thu May 08, 2008 5:36 pm

Hi all.

I only would like to know what you think about this new line of hardware.
I know that it´s so expensive, but it´s more proffesional that any mounted PC, and i could use to data centers or some like that.

Regars...

PowerRouter is not a Mikrotik product.

IMHO you would be better off purchasing or building your own server. You can build something far more robust for far less cost.

HI.

I know that it isn´t a MT product, but.....

Could you tell me how we could explain a client, we will put a PC clone to connect to the network core in a project of 1 million euros?

Such equipment (PowerRoute) is useful for MK because it seem to be more industrial that any more.
It´s like the big brother of RouterBoards.

jwcn:

I need some system that seems to be the most proffesional as possible. And if it have a good perfomance it will be better.

What IBM or HP or DELL system you recomend me?

And in the other hand, what about a ethernet card with bypass?
Did someone work with it?

Many thanks

Actually I have had some slightly bad experiences with big-name hardware. The main reason is that these manufacturers tend to use custom mainboards, chipsets, storage and network controllers, which may or may not work well (if at all) with MikroTik.

I have had most success with Supermicro, as they make decent rack-mount hardware with Intel-chipset based motherboards and Intel NICs, although I understand Supermicro is not as 'big-name' as HP/IBM/Dell.

Your alternative would be to use the MikroTik RB1000. I have had good experiences so far with it. The CPU is more powerful than I expected, and now with a rackmount case available it's ideal. The only situation I wouldn't use it is if I need a good webcache (sorry, CF Microdrive just doesn't cut it compared to standard PATA/SATA disk) or I need more than 4x Gigabit ports (never happened so far).

There are a number of reason to go with a Pre-Designed MT Solution. 1, as you can see, IRQ etc other issues, and changes to system boards and designs without notification with the big manufactures are a big thing. The ML110 changes every now and then, without changing model number for the most part, I sell these locally in St. Louis. With Windows, no problem, but MT this could be an issue.

2. Rear Ethernet ports, yes you can cable these, etc into a patch panel, but why waste the extra money when you can get them all front mounted.

3. Tested. No matter how much you plan,a tested product with the software you want is the way to go..

4. Servers, not saying these are bad, but its a server, is it designed for a MTBF of over 100,000 hours? I don't know what the routerboard line is designed for, but I bet its in this area or more. Servers, are not, they are just not designed for that runtime, not saying you won't get 3-4 years or more, but just saying, things happen.

If you have any questions on the PoweRouters, shoot us a e-mail at support@linktechs.net. We will be at ISPCON and MUM this week with all of ours!
