3.9 Problematic Version

Fri May 16, 2008 10:08 am

Hi,

seems that changes make the 3.x-Tree a beta-Tree again.
There are winbox issues where you easily can lock you
out.

Sometimes using dude, sometimes adding a route (big routing table)
the system get's unresponsive on PC P3 1,7GHz. CPU at 100% but
even when CPU comes down winbox does not work.
ssh still works so rebooting is possible. So I'm scared doing any changes
to this box.

3.7 seems to be best to go for the moment. Works stable on
Rb1000 (BGP/OSPF).

So MT you may think about your beta/nonbeta-development tree strategy.
It does not work right now.

The reports of bugs have been spotty at best and appear to be isolated issues. I would wonder if you don't have a problem unrelated to the upgrade.

I don't have evidence for certain, but I can say that I feel the same as ste...

3.7 solid everywhere. I skipped 3.8 because of horrer stories. I have 3.9 on new rb411s without problems but I've had problems with 3.9 on rb500 boards with daughterboards that work fine with 3.7.

If their change log is accurate there are many problems that crop up that shouldn't. We shouldn't feel scared to upgrade important boxes. I'm afraid many people are gunshy for good reason :)

I don't want to complain because what they have done with ROS is exceptional -- and the new hardware they have coming out also exceptional. But it is painful when stuff blows up -- probably a little more than is necessary.

I treat each release as test version until I am comfortable with feedback here and my own testing. At least the community is active enough to know when problems exist with certain configurations. I am thankful for that!

This is why my mission critical hardware is still running 2.9.51 ;-)

We still have our gateway NAT router on 2.8.26. It peaks at around 45Mbits x 12Mbits. We had a series of nightmares trying to bring it up to anything newer, so there it sits running fine.

Just about everything else (1500+ routers) is on 3.4 after a huge upgrade effort, and as soon as we replace the legacy P4 with an RB1000 the gateway router will be on V3 as well.
