2 ips to 1 card?

Tue Jun 24, 2008 9:57 pm

i am looking to change out my entire network to mikrotik and at the same time renumber my ip addresses.
my question is can i assign multiple ip addresses to my access points whilst i change over my customers so they do not loose connectivity.
thank you

richard

Have you tried looking at the entries in DHCP or perhaps in the ARP table on the switch? (assuming it's managed).

You can put more than one ip in each interface, but i can't think of any way of doing the switch, without even a second of lost connectivity... maybe you should inform your costumers that there will be loss of connectivity for some amount of time.
My suggestion is calculate the time needed, multiply it by 3 at least, and then inform them about it. They won't be dissapointed if you've informed them, on the other hand, if something goes wrong and they don't know about it, prepare your self for lots of bad reputation...

Richard my apologies, my previous post is in no way related to your question. I could have sworn it was posted in another thread but that seems to have been deleted.

Anyway back to your problem. Let's assume for one moment that you 'could' assign two IP addresses per network card (PCs), which one will host the default gateway? There can only be one default gateway.

So perhaps you need to think about assigning these with DHCP but using the MACs to make them all static. Same end result as you have now.

the plot seems to have gone astray (or i was not detailed enough). i want to assign 2 ip addresses to the AP (wireless card not the ethernet ports). this would enable me to put new customers on my new address range and over a period of time change my existing customers to the new range.

thanks

yes to can assign multiple IP addresses to a single interface on a router.

However..... without more information about the 'big picture' (the network configuation) it is difficult to know if this approach will accomplish your goal, or lead to trouble.
