need help with WDS setup

Fri Jul 25, 2008 4:54 am

I have a wireless hotspot system which I am using hotspotsystem.com for authentication/billing. They told me the best product to use when starting out would be the Linksys router which was easy to flash with the dd-wrt firmware. This worked fine for about a month and then the popularity grew on my hotspot. I had 30 customers and would get up to 15 concurrent connections. The performance would depreciate and the router would almost hang. Constant reboots. I am doing away with two of the Linksys routers and replacing them with the MikroTik.

This leads me to purchasing a RB 433 with two wlan cards. I still have a Linksys wrt54gl connected to DSL and distributing the wireless signal for half of the area needed. I have two RB 433 that I need to connect and use as a repeater through WDS. Question is, how do I set this up? I am new to networking and rather lost with the WInBox manager/routerOS. I need for WLAN2 (take it is the directional) to receive the signal and WLAN1 for the omni-directional antenna to redistribute the signal.

I have read the FAQ and WIKI and the instructions are rather vague. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

For the repeater you need to use the following configuration example,
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Wireless_repeater

but as you have linksys as access point WDS isn't possible, and mode station doesn't support bridging.
You may try to use mode=station-pseudobridge, that is special client mode which allows bridging.

Add WLAN2 that will be an accesspoint and WLAN1 as mode=station-pseudobridge to bridge,

Thank you for your reply.

Also, the Linksys router has the dd-wrt software installed in it. I have configured two of them for WDS at this location. However, these two are the ones I am replacing with the Mikrotik.

I might be calling this the AP when it maybe should be called the main gateway? As it will be the main gateway to the WORLD. This will be the device destributing the signal out.

Thanks for the links. I will review them in more detail later today.
