wds problem

Sat Sep 13, 2008 2:19 am

today i ventured into the wds arena where i created my first near working system.

basically i got everything working.

my problem is this: if i stand on the roof near the omni antenna (the vertical one on the right side) with a laptop in my hand i can see the signal very strong however it comes and goes. it will simply not connect.

everything connected to the LAN via the rb333 works beautifuly. its just the wireless from the station-wds side is a mess.

i have created a picture of what my setup looks like.

any help is greatly appreciated!

Good Day,

You do not mention how far the two sites are appart, but do mention that you are not getting signal.

I must admit that WDS was hard for the first setup, we are using the roamable mesh setup, and it is working greate.

setup that we used is as follow on both client and main ap (only one antenna in use on each ap)

Mikrotik 1 (ROS3.13)

WLAN 1 Channel 1=2412mhz set in AP-Bridge wds enabled with dynamic setup...on bridge 1. (lan1+wlan1 bridged)

Mikrotik 2 (ROS2.9.51) set in AP-Bridge wds enabled with dynamic setup ... on bridge 1 (lan1+wlan1 bridged)

Did not implement any security profiles, for the mikrotik links, but client in street is still able to connect...open network.

Maximum distance that we can get mikrotik to mikrotik is 34km have at this stage not tried any further. 5.5Mbit Link.

Station 1 is 17dbi 120deg sector, station 2 is a home made omni antenna...gain unknown but approx~10dbi these are approx~5km from each other with line of sight.

So the only thing that could make your link unstable would be either interference, or lack of signal.

I also notices that you have your grid mounted incorrectly, if you want horizontal polarisation on that grid just switch the feed line to horizontal, otherwise you will find it is very difficult to allign your dish to get good signal.

That statement is incorrect.

the distance is about 1km between the station (rb333) and the ap-bridge (rb433). its not far at all but where i live theres lots of interference caused by people blasting wifi amplifiers.
When i said i couldnt connect i was standing on the same roof as the vertical antenna (on the right side of the picture)

i figured out the problem was this: Since both polarities, Horizontal and Vertical send out the SSID my laptop would see the signal and it would try to connect by SSID. Of course it can only connect to the vertical antenna and not the Horizontal one. This leaves it confused and causes the delay in connecting.
