Ubuntu and Winbox

Thu Oct 02, 2008 8:13 am

I dont know if this is the place to ask this but here goes. I recently have had it with Microsoft crap and decided to go else where. I have changed my computer to Ubuntu 8.04 desktop and have installed Wine 1.0 along with Winbox 2.2.13 Well every thing seem to get started but I cant connect. Winbox starts, I put in the address and it said it was connecting but it never does, it just times out. Any thoughts as to how to get winbox working. I sure dont want to have to go back to windozzzzzz.

P.S
It's a shame that a linux base program has to use a windozzzzz program to access it. It would be nice if there were a Linux version of winbox.. Just a thought.

winbox runs fine under wine for me to, using ubuntu version 8.04
If its not connecting it sounds more like an issue getting to the mikrotik than with wine..

as normis said, try ssh and see if you can connect to the mikrotik using that, if so then it may indeed be a problem on the local machine, but if you can't it would indicate a problem elsewhere.

had the same problem today, i had to restart the mikrotik then it works fine after.

though it sometimes disconnects quite frequently but i think it is just incompatibility issues in hardware that i used.

It seems that there is something amiss, as I have an Asus Eeepc that I have wine and winbox on and it works ok. What version of Wine and Winbox is working with your PC's. Im not sure with the Asus unit what is running there. The laptop that I yanked Vista from is an Acer with the above mentioned configuration. SSh I'll look in to, I just dont have all the CLI knowledge to fine all the things Im a custom to in winbox.

I've had mixed success with winbox running under wine, it usually works. One thing which hasn't worked for me yet is mac-winbox when running under wine.

A native linux version of winbox would be much more elegant.

Hi,

I am a linux user and i have tried a few times to get winbox running without crashing but with no success.

Ubuntu 8.10
- Wine 1.0.1
- Winbox 2.2.10

I can connect without any problems, but the winbox freezes when i open any window inside mikrotik.

I cannot downgrade wine because i need the latest version to use with another win appz.

Is there any solution to get winbox working great in ubuntu with the latest version of winbox ?

Thanks

GNU/Linux user here (Ubuntu 8.10) with default provided packages from Ubuntu Intrepid repositories

mac-winbox works like a charm - of course, i use it only in cases i have to set up ip address and i do not have any other means to connect, when using mac-winbox i usually disable secure mode, so no encryption is needed since box is in same Ethernet as i am and i usually fully control the ethernet network that is that close to me.

winbox - that is using ip address not the mac address - works without any problems and is reliable, i always use secure, as this is used over other networks i usually do not control.

usually i use default wine config (install wine, launch winbox)

Hi,
I use Kubuntu Intrepid - standard wine etc.
I connect to devices through a VPN established through KVpnc.

Each time I connect with Winbox it downloads the plugins if needed, logs on and then disconnects the VPN with the message:

Remote modem has hung up. Connection was terminated.

The log has the messages:
error: Remote modem has hung up. Connection was terminated.
debug: There is a reason for stop connecting, terminating "pppd" process.
debug: pppd secrets file: /etc/ppp/chap-secrets

This happens with all devices regardless of RouterOS version or Winbox version.

I connect perfectly from a Window$ workstation.

Any thoughts to resolving would be appreciated

are you useing that tunnel all the time, or just to connect to router? if so, what happens if you leave tunnel open for some time, or try to access other resources?

Thanks for the reply.
I only use the tunnel when I need to access routers. It is specifically for this purpose and is shut down when access no longer needed. It can remain open for long periods without shutting down. It is only when Winbox acesses a device that the VPN is terminated.
