I could really use some help here, please?

Tue Nov 25, 2008 1:48 am

Between IRC, these forums, and the manual/wiki I've come to no help on this one.
And it should be very simple.

We own a /22, with ether1 setup as 72.8.60.12/22 (or 24) and ether2 72.8.62.100/22 (or 24) only ether1 will route to it's gateway 72.8.60.1
ether2 is to be designated hotspot/dhcp server, I can't have any NATing going on otherwise I can't track customers to _real_ ip addresses.

I've tried bridging, but one big issue is ether1 can not be broadcasting dhcp/hotspot -- which isn't very easy to filter with a bridged interface.
I've tried mark routing, but it hasn't worked as well.
I've gotten a lot of people telling me I have to segregate the networks and then they will route properly, but what sense does this make if I've segregated them with a /24 why would I have to segregate them even further? .60 and .62 are not the same subnet.

I would really appreciate any help on this, I'm starting to bang my head on the desk

I would suggest starting with a proper topic title, and a clearly formulated question. a network diagram picture would also help :)

Well, when I did that nobody cared to respond. Maybe I should type in all caps and non proper english, I've seen enough posts where that has generated more responses.

I want to issue public IPs to our customers, and I don't want dhcp/hotspot going out ether1 (72.8.60.12) so bridging simply doesn't work. Ether2 (72.8.62.100) won't route through my gateway 72.8.60.1, hotspot works great but is useless without a route. dhcp server setup on it won't take the gateway settings saying it's not within the dhcp network, but if I use a /22 it -is- within the network but it still gives me the same error.

I've read that using proxy-arp could be usefull for this situation, but I've yet to see it implemented in any working manner. When I read the manual it simply said "Turn on proxy arp on ether1 or ether2", and I've tried this but no luck.

You need to make sure your /22 is routed to you. If it is, this is not an issue, should function without any issues. You will have a /30 on your internet interface, and your /22 (or smaller) would be on your hotspot interface. If this is not routed to you, your only choice is ProxyARP, and I personally don't like that solution. I would tell my provider to ensure that /22 is routed to me. Just my 2 cents.

I'm sure any of the certified Mikrotik Engineers here http://www.mikrotik.com/consultants.html can help you get started in the right direction. Course, they typically charge. But if you need it working, might be worth a few bucks.
