Finding the best solution.

Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:21 pm

Hi all you propeller heads :D ,

I have read through manuals and forums till my eyes have bled, but perhaps i just need to be pushed into the right direction to narrow my search.
Any help will be appreciated.

Wireless Scenario:

Rb433 at 4 x seperate REMOTE OFFICE locations linking to HiSite A
Rb433 at HiSite A

Rb433 at 2 x seperate REMOTE OFFICE locations linking to HiSite B
Rb433 at HiSite B

HiSite A (RB433AH) and HiSite B (RB433AH) PTP's back to HiSite C (RB433AH)

HiSite C (RB433AH) PTP backhauls to MainSite (RB433AH) where the main office with the DHCP server etc reside.

Q1: Now what is the BEST setup regarding mode's for the a)REMOTE OFFICES b)HiSites A & B & C c) HiSite Backhaul & MainOffice
Q2: What is the best setup for REMOTE OFFICES to receive DHCP from MAINOFFICE
Q3: What is the best setup regarding routing for all MikroTik devices to be contactable from MAINOFFICE.

Hopefully I've made sense to the people who wear the MikroTik crowns :)
I am running other clients running PTP links, but they bridged (Bridge & Station PseudoBridge) which works fine for their needs, BUT apparently bridging isn't the best way AND it wont work in this scenario because there are multiple links.

Any help on this would be a life saver because I need to go out on Monday and begin reconfiguring these devices that are ALL already installed onsite.

Yours humbly
In Need.

I would look into simple static routes, without NAT and maybe with DHCP relay, or bridge + set the bridge to pass through the firewall for proper filtering and nodes isolation, to keep them wireless links transferring only the important traffic. By the way, what's your internet uplink?

thx for replying.

Client internet uplink will reside from MAINOFFICE. What mode do u recommend the rb's to be set in? I hear bridging is not the best?
will this allow winbox connectivity throughout on this topology?

With proper configuration WinBox connectivity is guaranteed. No matter what the mode etc. Did you look into routing mode or NAT mode?

Bridging works fine in small networks. I define small as 100 to 200 maximum. I would use a small private network for just the radios.

The negatives: As the number of devices increase on the same network, the broadcast traffic takes more bandwidth. Routing gives you better isolation from network abuse.

The positives: Easier to keep track of radios. You can sniff MAC addresses and reach all radios. It is a simple configuration. You don't waste networks (IPs).

I use station-wds on the CPE for bridging instead of pseudo-bridge. Set WDS mode to dynamic. Set up a bridge with both ethernet and wlan attached to the bridge.

I have attached a very rough simple diagram of the layout.
Bar, the remote offices, the remainder of the links are point to point. You mentioned Wds, but is that also the correct option for the PTP links?
The Remote Offices have an average of 1-5 computers.
They have given us one IP subnet range to work with within their bigger network.

I'd like to do routing on this.

Could you in your experience, look at the diagram and advise me as to best setup?
thanks in advance.

I agree with Tom, you can use bridge.

If HiSite A and HiSite B were access points running DCHP server,

is there a way for Wireless User 1 running winbox to connect

to the mikrotik router card for Wireless User 5 ?

I've broken our network into 5 access points with each ap being a DCHP server with 10- 20 users connected to each ap.
