Install RouterOS on ALIX without NetInstall

Tue Mar 03, 2009 3:01 pm

Hi everybody,
Has anybody installed RouterOS on a ALIX board without using NetInstall? I'm a Mac OSX user, so I don't have the ability to use NetInstall.

If anybody have any thoughts on this, please let me know.

Regards
/Marcus

Hi,
Depending on witch Alix board you have. If you have one with a external HD drive IDE connector you can connect a CDROM on that by using a 40pin to 44 pin IDE cable.
Another option is to use an older CF image from routerOS. You can write the image with Physdiskwrite.exe. Once software installed you can upgrade to a newer version.

... sorry for Linux users use 'dd' to write the image to the CF. I don't know MAC but maybe 'dd' also exists for MAC.

Sorry to bring this up again,
But I know have a Windows XP computer with Netinstall 3.20. When selecting the CF in the Routers/Drives, clicking the packages (i choose all) and then clicking "Install" I get an error message saying "Cannot copy system files" and status on the CF change to "Failed". I'm using a 4GB CF (it's all I had available). Does anyone know what I'm missing here?

Also, you cannot dd the mikrotik iso file as it doesn't contain the appropriate filesystem information, such as MBR, to successfully boot from. Maybe somebody have an image of RouterOS complete with boot record and everything needed to boot from?

Hi,
By older image I don't mean a CD ISO image but a CF image (.img) file.
