3.23 MIB + DUDE

Wed May 13, 2009 8:44 pm

Hi ...

I've been tunning my home instalation (and learning of course) and noticed some behaviours. HW is a WRAP + ROS3.23 + Ubiquiti SR2 + Huawei E156 3G Modem + 2GBytes USB Stick as web-proxy storage.

- When running Dude, to see any speed updates on links labels I need to use mastering type SNMP. If mastering type is Routeros, the link label speed only updates if the settings window from WRAP is opened. 3rd party devices uses SNMP anyway so they update speed normally.

- Setting the mastering type to SNMP on ppp-client (3G modem) works ok. But the ROS MIB "default" speed is 57.6Kbps for ppp. Of course I set the speed manually on label settings (e.g. 2Mbps) to set the "alarm" on label + link line. The link type does not matters, the 57.6K speed is defined at ROS MIB and is always there when mouse stands and the info window pops-up.

- Request: Using Winbox at 3G PPP Client a RSL monitor (like the signal level on wireless interface). Since ppp-client info already query the modem on request, is it possible to intergrate RSSI query at the ppp-interface tab?

- Request: paralell to USB support + the possibility to set/unset paralell port pins manually or via scripts, netwatch, etc. For "us" that use embedded PCs remotelly installed the possibility to send commands to peripheral HW (hard resets, turn on or off anything when using an apropriate interface - relays, actuate on antenna positioners, etc) will make life easier. Example: a freezed modem that needs to be disconected and reconected back to power supply. In my case this means 250m toward a hill top + 10m of tower.

Hi, i´m from brazil.

If you need access de MK from remote, via 3g, the best way is buy a ROUTER 3G with lan port, and foward ports to MK.

The modems of CLARO, VIVO, TIM, easy freeze, i have tested some.

Well my 3G modem rarely freezes and I know why it frozes here:

- those USB modems are very current consumming (0.5A) and require a clean power supply as close as possible to 5V. With 10% less voltage the modem behaviour is unpredictable.

- My specific case the modem and the router are mounted outside on a small pole because I live very far from any 3G tower. To reach one cell use a 1.5 solid parabolic reflector with a home made 2GHz feeder. Electronics outside home means weather proofing and this region is very wet (Mata Atlântica). This wet sometimes creates some bad contacts on USB connectors (is not completely sealed yet).

- Since I'm far away from cells, two or 3 cells signals arrive with different levels at the modem. Of course it connects to the strongest one but there is other 2 signals arriving at the same time. This creates some sort of interference (co-channel) because the signal levels fluctuate along the day (depends on local temperature, fog, rain scatter etc).

But I'll take a look at this Router 3G. May be easier to weather proof but if it has USB for an modem stick (and not a built-in modem without mobile contacts) I guess I'll have the same problems.
