Wireless ISP structure ideas please?

I am planning to provide internet wirelessly for long distance (2 - 3 Kms) point to multipoint, so here is my plan:

- a RouterOS installed on 386 with Wireless Card connected to an amplifier then to an omni antenna (currently 8db)
- clients will be provided with Antenna (directional 14db) connected directly to an Access Point (Edimax)

Questions:

- how do I have to configure the AP at the client (bridge? client mood? Repeater?)
- do you think onmi 8db is enough?

Thanks

Get rid of the amplifier.

8dBi antenna + amplifier = very bad idea :) uninstall amplifier, sell it, and buy the best antenna you can get.

Thanks for help, I decided to ge rid of the amplifier and to configure the AP as client.

now, I am using amni 8db base station with 14db directional, when I try the site servey I get 30db signal, is it okay? what is the minimal signal I can have to get it work?

thanks

For best quality signal you should have signal strength between -45 and -75dBm

if the signal is below -80dbm you will get drop outs especailly if you have encryption on your link.

I keep my signal levels between -70 and -90. I'd rather not have anyone on worse than -85, but, several of my customers that average -88 are rock solid at that level. Several that have are in the -70's will fluctuate.

Every shot is different. Right now, I have a 12dBi omni on one tower, 17dBi 120* sectors x3 on another, 15dBi omni on another. I have more customers on my 12dBi omni, even a couple that are -85 or worse, though the sectors seem more stable and are far more flexible.

90% of my customers are 19dBi Rootennas with Crossroads.

- Get rid of the 386. Get a RouterBoard 411A instead.
- Get rid of the amplifier. Use your money for a high quality radio card and antenna instead - will work MUCH BETTER.
- The client side probably needs to be in "bridge" or "client" mode.
- I recommend you use MikroTik or Ubiquiti equipment on the client side.

You have too much signal. It's like someone screaming in your ear - you can hear them, but can't understand.

Reduce the output power on both the AP and client side until you are at between -55 and -65.

You did remove the amp, right?

on that distance, forget the omni. buy a RB433 and install 3 sectors directional antennas (pannels)

RK, actually I am using Edimax AP for testing, in the site servey section I get the wireless networks available with its signals, I get 40 for my network but I dont know if it db or not, not sure because if I put the AP a few meters from the antenna it gives maximum 60, it is kind of (40 of 60)!! I am investigating

valypetre, which of you prefer: 14db omni antenna or 3 X 120deg pannels?

thanks

I strongly disagree. Why would he need directional antennas for ONLY 3 KM?

because for some of us, omni's are no good for 500m, not to say more...

I am kind of convences to go with the directional, my 8db omni has only 7 degrees veritcally broadcasting while I found directional antennas on the web that has 20deg! in my case the antenna is been installed on a mountain which is higher than the clients antennas! I need wide
angle.

thanks,
