Everybody,

Please upload pictures of your installations. It'll help guys who aren't as experienced as some of us a good idea of how to do things right.

I'll get the ball rolling with an RB411, an R52 and a 24dBi grid antenna with 3m LMR400 cable.

RB433AH bolts to the backplate with brass bolts.
RB600 used plastic stick on mounts. Hence ground cable.

Hi All
We are busy to install a mikrotik network in RSA, we have learned the hard way about winds on our high sites. We have used 38mm by 1.6mm steel poles then our August winds came and blew our hole structure down and we had to rebiuld it with 50mm by 10mm steel poles and straped it down with 10mm cables, the grids had to be tied at the back with cables aswell becaus the L bracked have broken off by the wind, here are pickture after the rebuld

Couple of piccy's to share, some might remember some pictures from a MUM presentation in singapore a couple of years back..

How we have built a tower structure in a VERY windy location with only 3 holes in the ground as well (hard to access site and VERY hard ground) - Note fence around bottom keeps animals etc out and provides strentgh to overal structure..

How we apply earthing to Coax cables at the bottom of one our our standard poles.
There has been a lot of talk in the past about the whole earthing issue and i suspect its something many people overlook.

Site im just building showing how i like to make use of wooded poles with microwave dish's (i hate wooden poles)
Also, note use of cable clamps, not a zip tie in site...

Here is a custom job I did for the top of a building in the center of town

Proof that cisco and mikrotik can live in the same box

This is 224 feet up on a coal burner for a power plant. Coal dust was an issue so silicone was used on the door and vent holes.

I really like the three pole tower design, the added strength eliminates any issues with "sail" area from the panels. We have been using the lighting arrestors to earth the cables as well as provide some protection against strikes, are you using the shield penetrating earth kits as well as arrestors, or just the earth kits ?

Yip that structure can handle a lot of load with panels or big dish's, and can have the tops extended -see the flanges on top (or doubled) to give more height if required.
As irony would have it im visiting that site tommorow (first time in a year) because a bad wind in a storm has destroyed the solar panels?!

To be honest we dont bother with lightening arrestors anymore couple of points why;
1: If lightening really has a go the gear is toast, give up, its cheap gear replace it...
2: Its really the static buildup (misty water laiden wind etc) that we are trying to get rid off and it normally shows with better more solid connections and long lasting wireless cards..

The effect has been though since being a lot more pro-active in earth things (and no we arnt perfect not every site is done - just the worst ones) i cant remember the last card we have had to replace thats had a fried rx or tx in it? (for no apprant reason)

Dont get me wrong either, we have a lot of sites in harsh places like the Marlbrough sounds and had a network down the west coast (south island) so these things get some discharge around them..

So to answer the question, earth kits only.
(usualy cabinent has an earth bar in it as well for radios/other gear as well)

I'm worried about the weld penetration on this bracket.

Did you get this bracket x-rayed before mounting it?
Did the fabricator use plug welds from the back for added strength?

believe me, this support is very safe. It's 1 cm depht. It's welded and has 3 layers of protective coating. I'll send you more pictures when I have time.

About 1/4 of them work, and are being replaced with products from Synaccess as budget allows.

Here's one I did a few years back, we changed out 8m LMR spooled on the mast for some 4metre ones the next day. Identical setup at the far end. RB600 with 2xR52 running NStreme2 over 40Mhz channels with 80mbit full duplex, it was only just over 1 kilometer so TX power is as low as we could set it!

It could probably go faster, but seemed to be CPU limited as they were pegged at 100% during testing.

Monitoring food http://tandem.ck.ua/ups_mtm-eng.php.
UPS-MT-monitor can also control the power, if RB411 (433) does not want to respond (hangs).

Only problem we have ever had with these is 1 fan went bad and was buzzing very loud. They sent us a new one (fan) and took me 5 min to change out.

Interesting. Glad they're working for you. We had nothing but problems, and their customer service was not helpful to us at all.

I would be more worried about the grade 5 bolts used on there then the welds. I mean the welds do not look very good to me either, and they should of built them up more. But the welder was thinking what I was, Its a small tower anyways. Good to see they sealed the top to stop water from going behind the bracket and freezing, well.. I think that was in NewZeland? probably doesnt freeze there anyways

I think you should replace the bolts, the sheer strength on the grade 5 bolts is pretty low, and even witht he vibration from the lines, they will probably wear and break sooner then you expect. Just hope you catch it... Literally.... before it falls.

I was thinking of setting up a 10 meter tower in my back yard, do you think the neighbors would mind?

You plug those two r52n each one on a piece that looks like a 90 degree splitter. Is that true or that is not only a splitter, but a cavity filter?? Can I use a single polarity antenna with both r52n radio chains using a 5ghz splitter??

Here you can see the Dbii board is earthed to the RB411, which is in turn earthed to the radio antenna.
The radio antenna is then earthed to a copper water pipe via an earth strap.

No! The F20 does not give issues when grounded.

However, they do need to be grounded, which is why when you guys ship them, there's an earth cable as part of the package. I've not used one that's not been grounded properly, but I suspect that performance will decrease if it's not grounded properly.

To make sure I'm seeing correctly, thats a 24dbi 2.4 correct... (was thinking it's a 19)

would TRULY appreciate it, as Im getting tired of using bulky enclosures and having to field crimp lmr to fit the install.

Gewiss enclosures can be purchased in most countries.

As for the mounting to the antenna. That's something that I designed and I get laser cut. I'm sure if you take a piece of metal and play, you'll come up with something that you can get made.

It's a 24 on a nice 50mm galv pole with 3mm wall thickness.

1.- How long the coaxial cable can be?
2.- What is the distance aprox. that you have a point to point link or point to multipoint

1. Not more than 2m. Longer cable means loss of signal.
2. Depends on the antenna and wireless card, and also the conditions (visibility, interference, trees, water). Can be up to 200Km if conditions are perfect, and points are on mountains or big towers.

RF Designs in Cape Town sell LMR600, as well as the correct N Type connectors. They can also make up the cabels if you don't have a crimping tool.

Here's a little project that I'm working on at the moment. It's still on the bench being tested, but will soon be on a tower.

I started with a galvanised plate to mount the equipment on and drilled holes and set up mounts for the RB600 / 800 and the switch.

I then cut holes for the fuse boxes, mounted the fuse boxes and mounted some PoE injectors with some cable management strips.

You can see an aluminium heat sink in the top right hand corner. Some PVRs will be mounted there.

Power is from 2 x 12V 70A batteries that are specifically designed for this type of work. They are charged by a Meanwell PSU. Power is supplied to a series of MCBs that will be located in close proximity to the batteries.

The MCB panel is wired as follows:

Left MCB - Main switch, feeds 2nd MCB and stepdown transformer.
2nd MCB - 24V up the tower to the routerboard panel.
Stepdown transformer converts 24V to 13.8V and feeds 3rd MCB and fuse block.
3rd MCB - 13.8V feed up the tower to the routerboard panel.
Fuse block - Cabinet fans, GSM Commander and alarm.

ether1 on the RB600 goes to the TPLink switch
ether3 on the RB600 goes to the RB450

ether2 - ether5 on the RB450 go to PoE injectors 10 - 13. This will allow me to set up UBNT Nanobridges or Rockets as dumb bridges and have router to router connections without any traffic collissions normally associated with switches.

The bottom 9 PoE injectors are all connected to the TPLink switch and will eventually be connected to RB711A boards that will be connected to sectoral antennas. These boards ether1 ports will all be in the same /28 subnet as ether3 on the RB600. Or, I could use UBNT rockets with their sectoral antennas to build a hybrid access point down the line.

As things stand, the RB600 will have 1 x R52H, 2 x R5H and 2 x F50Pro and will do all the AP work, but there's room for expansion

And yes, those are 2 x 512MB CF cards on the RB600.

Yeah! It sounds good. Very good clamp and very good plugs.

In this case it's should be ok, but IMHO it's better to have two clamps (of poorer quality if you want) because with only one clamp the mast will move a bit with some wind (30-50km/h) and it could create movement to the pieces (screws, nuts, ...) and this resistance could be weaken with some time. My suggestion it's always two clamps and better when more distance separates the clamps on the mast because the fixation will be better.

This work has 6 sectors Ubiquiti XM5 with 17dBi antennas-90 º.
These AP are in bridge mode and connected to a RB-493AH server does PPPoE, QoS.

Are the antennas too close together? I've thought up another mast and separate at least 1 meter. do you think?

Currently I have no proof that separating the antennas even more would have any benefit.

If it works - keep them like they are. Check signal and quality levels in high traffic times.

Thank you, the signal is good but for now the network is in test, there are
not high traffic for the moment. I will see the production behavior in 3 month.

Here we have a little DIN rail.

The circuit breaker on the left is the "main switch".
From there AC power is supplied to 2 circuit breakers.
The breaker on the left controls the blue and white Meanwell DIN rail mount power supply. That power supply in turn powers the Planet ATA next to it. The Planet ATA is the cheapest device with an IP address that I've been able to find. It is powered "in the wild" so it will go off if there is a power failure and then Dude will notify me.
The breaker on the right controls the timer, which turns power on or off to the large power supply. The batteries connect to that power supply. As do the attached devices.
Each attached device is then powered on or off via a circuit breaker. Two breakers are for the RB750 and the RB250GS. One is for an external device and the other two are for future use.

This is what it looks like in a cabinet with a custom built battery tray and 3 x 105AH batteries.

Lastly, here is the "external device" mentioned above. RB435G, RB750, 4 x POE injectors for appliances.

Under the batteries, you can se a little grey box. That's a GSM pager. One of the relays is connected to Output, I can restart the whole site with one call. The other relay is connected to Input of the pager. If there is input power outage at the site, it sends an SMS to our phones.

The GSM Commander is brilliant. It has Windows based programming software and has daughter boards. You can use it to switch AC or DC. I use them to monitor power, to monitor doors and to shut down and restart computers and routers as needed.

The Cellswitch is not as powerful. For a start, it doesn't know whether the power is on or not. You have to use one of the inputs to monitor an output on the power supply. The on board relay is also much smaller than the GSM Commander (2A vs 8A) but it's a good idea to run all power through a separate relay in any case.

The saving grace of the cellswitch is the brilliant web based programming interface. This means that a unit can be reprogrammed on site. The GSM Commander has a USB port and needs to be connected to a computer to accept changes to the instructions.

The GSM Commander has a smaller brother called the SMS Commander. Two inputs and one output only. We use a lot of them at my hotspots.

Even though the capital costs for these things may seem high. Spending six hours in low range 4x4 to get to some sites, cycling the power switch by than and then six hours back again costs a lot more in time, vehicle running costs and potential damage to the vehicle than even the most expensive GSM Commander.

Here's a panel that I'm building at the moment that has a Cellswitch 100. The Cellswitch's cellular transceiver also isn't great. I'm having to use an 11dBi gain yagi antenna to get a decent signal - in my workshop, where a GSM Commander get a strong signal with a 0 dBi gain dipole.

You are right, this is the 24dBi version. We use lot of them on backbone links. There aren't any problems with them since they are mounted on towers.

I made a mistake upper, the cards are not r5hn, they are r52hn. There are two MMCX connectors on the card, simply we plugged in only one pigtail cable, and leaved the other empty.

How can you get such a good signal over that distance? Or do you don't care about the allowed TX Power?

My RB600 with 4 5Ghz Antenna on top of the mountain here in the south of Namibia. it links to Skorpion Zinc mine about 24 kilometers away to provide coverage to the town. The other end is connected to a 10 Mb ADSL line with
Ubiquiti's SR-71 doing the back haul, and Mikrotiks doung the routing, hotspot etc.

Power the equipment directly from the battery.

Get a SIP ATA (probably the cheapest device with an IP address).
Connect that device to one of the ethernet ports on your network (or ether3 or ether3 on the RB43x). Power it straight from AC power.

Use Dude or Nagios or OpenNMS to monitor your network.

As soon as the AC goes down, the ATA will be "dead", the network management system will pick it up and notify you.

AD155 provides a small charging current.
Current charge for your problems is not enough! ( 2 100Ah battery!!!)
Here it is better to PSC-60 / PSC-100, SCP-35 / SCP-50 / SCP-75.

Lastly.
Meanvell equipment has proved to be very good.

Dbii boards are very sensitive to earthing issues.

This is the F20 2.4GHz unit.

Here you can see the Dbii board is earthed to the RB411, which is in turn earthed to the radio antenna.
The radio antenna is then earthed to a copper water pipe via an earth strap.

One of my tower station..

these are incredibly cool boxes. very neat and what r u using for power management..some kind of UPS or DG power.
At our sites it gets very tough to manage diesel for gensets, so we gotta use batteries and charger panels but have not found a stable solution yet.

i have repeatedly sought it from Mikrotik. inverters/ups's have lot of charge wasteage and other electrical chargers often affect the routerboards.

i would welcome any kind of stable solutions and alert system.

Here is my Mikrotik RIC/522 5.8 GHz installation. Link distance is around 2.5km.
This equipment links my home network to my ham radio D-Star/IRLP/AIS/telemetry/video equipment at my comms site. Much cheaper than maintaining another ADSL connection at the remote site.

It's been installed since Mid 2010 and has been incredibly reliable, just like having an ethernet cable between the two locations! The mast at home also holds up my TV antenna.

It's rack type 3kw online ups and we control it with netagent(http://www.megatec.com.tw/) working very well.It send's everything about power also ups.

I want to ask my tricky question to you professionals

Am I able to connect 2 routerboards in two neighboring valleys or do they need immediate "sight contact"?

As I figured by myself: I want to connect two houses with an airline of approx 4 Kilometers by MicroTik WiFi, but some friend of mine said, that this is only possible as you can see the receiver (see the house for instance) is this right?

Feed on the second picture is not installed properly. Polarisation mark must be upwards while antenna grid is in horizontal (for vertical polarisation). If you want horizontal polarisation you must turn complete antenna with grid and feed 90 degrees clockwise or counterclokwise.

So here is a project I was working on at 3 am. WTF!!! I didn't have a case, so I made one, for a temporary setup for this RB112. I am proud to have found a new life for the RB112, even for the short time that it will be in the Q-Tips Box.
