Hi

Yeah but thoose guides are for 3G devices connected via the USB connector, i am working with the MC8790 which is conencted via the mini PCIe, and that seems to give some problems to the RB411U.

First of all the routerboard seems to be very in-responsive when the MC8790 is connected, but this can be because of communication problems.

I have verified the MC8790 on other systems, and here there is not problems.

What i am looking for is information about which channels to use? The MC8790 has 7 channels, and i have managed to do a serial login to channel 4 with 9600 baud, but when i am configuring the ppp-client to use channel 4, it gets action timeout.

Below is my ppp-client configuration

interface ppp-client print
Flags: X - disabled, R - running
0 name="ppp-out1" max-mtu=1500 max-mru=1500 mrru=disabled port=usb2 command-channel=4
data-channel=0 info-channel=0 user="" password="" profile=ppp-3 phone="*99***1#"
dial-command="ATDT" modem-init="AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","bredband.tre.dk"" null-modem=no
dial-on-demand=no add-default-route=no use-peer-dns=no allow=pap,chap,mschap1,mschap2

system resource usb print
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 2:1 RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 2:2 Sierra Wireless, Incorporated Mini Card 480 Mbps
2 1:1 RB400 OHCI 12 Mbps

It takes around 2 minutes to print below

[admin@MikroTik] > port print
Flags: I - inactive
# NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD-RATE
0 serial0 1 Serial Console auto
1 usb2 7 PPP <ppp-out1> 9600

Hi Guys

I managed to solve the MC8790 issues!!

The main issue is the firmware of the MC8790, version 1.x is NOT compatible with RouterOS 3.25, the board get's inresponsive, and pratically impossible to work with, but with MC8790 version 2.x, it's a pleasure to work with!

My working configuration is like this:

[admin@MikroTik] > system resource usb print
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 2:1 RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 2:3 Sierra Wireless, Inco... MC8790 480 Mbps
2 1:1 RB400 OHCI 12 Mbps

[admin@MikroTik] > port print
Flags: I - inactive
# NAME CHANNELS USED-BY BAUD-RATE
0 serial0 1 Serial Console auto
1 usb3 7 PPP <ppp-out1> 9600

[admin@MikroTik] > interface ppp-client print
Flags: X - disabled, R - running
0 R name="ppp-out1" max-mtu=1500 max-mru=1500 mrru=disabled port=usb3
command-channel=3 data-channel=3 info-channel=0 user="" password=""
profile=ppp-3 phone="*99***1#" dial-command="ATDT"
modem-init="AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","bredband.tre.dk"" null-modem=no
dial-on-demand=no add-default-route=no use-peer-dns=no
allow=pap,chap,mschap1,mschap2

Hi,

I'm searching such a solution to send a SMS from a RB411U or RB411UAHR with a PrePay Sim card.
Do you think/know this is possible?

Ipala;

All firmwares and aplications are here;

I am using firmware version 2.0.7.1B but I can not connect to internet successfully until now , some people advised to use masquerade but no way, It is not working.

I paid more money for ten piece 411U and MC8790 but they are sitting on my desk :(

Normis hi;

I have boards since 1 month;

First I tried 411U boards with HP's UN2400 ( Qualcaomm Gobi1000) but that 3G module doesn't support .

after I bought Sierra Wireless MC8790 and it worked, board can attached 3G network and take IP.

There is not any error because there is not any fault. 3G card and 411U can attached 3G network successfuly.

but but but 3G provider is giving same gateway IP with attached IP , can it make problem?

Problem solved, I can connect 3G network and I can surf Internet via RB411U+MC8790 combination.

Problem was add-default-route=yes, don't enable that in UMTS interface and add manualy route with gatewat=ppp interface as UMTS connection.

Hi,

I have the same problem with unresponsive RB411U that I have just installed a mini-Pcie MC8790 card in. Any solution on this one yet?

Confirming solution. I updated a firmware to 2.0.7x on my mini-PCI adapter and the router is responsive and works perfectly. In order to upgrade the mini-PCIe adapter you need the board or converter to USB and Sierra Wireless software upgrade. (Be sure to upgrade the Sierra Wireless board firmware before upgrading the firmware on the mini-pcie adapter (MC8790). The correct (easiest) procedure would be to contanct your local Sierra Wireless distributor, (because Sierra Wireless firmware and upgrade solutions aren't free for public (mini-pcie models, USB are)) and let them upgrade it for you.

Good routing!

p.s.

Works with RoS 4.10 and beta5 np.

To any one who's currently battling this problem and feels like they're getting nowhere:

I know how you feel. I had battled this issue with the MC8790 for a while. Eventually I engineered myself into Sierra Wireless and got access to their unlocked firmware upgrade exe's for Windows. They work well with a little netbook that has a mini-PCIe port. However even after moving to 2.0.7 I still had issues with latency and connection. My suggestion? Purchase an MC8700, they're faster (21mbps as opposed to 7mbps) and easier to work with. I just dropped it into my RB411u and poof it worked.

TL;DR: MC8790 Bad | MC8700 FTW

Its working perfectly from 4.10 and up, you only need the new firmware 2.x.x.

m2mconnectivity:

You are right, my bad, was too quick. I only tested MC8790 and it works ok after firmware upgrade. Although I like miniPCIe solutions in Mikrotik, maybe it's not a bad idea to check the Globethrotter USB UMTS modems. Very cheap, reliable enough and much lower prices then Sierra Wireless, which is very very overpriced. Atleast in my country.

USB UMTS Globethrotter = cca 20-25€
SW mini PCIe cards = cca 100€+

If it's an PCI-E model you need a special board to upgrade it. As far as i know it can only be done by the SW representative for a specific country. USB versions have no problems being updated over PC. Correct me pls if i'm wrong.

To upgrade you can use the PCI-E port in a laptop and run the correct upgrade exe. Has anyone successfully used a MC8705 yet?

My configuration:

Mikrotik RB411U

RouterOS v 5.1
Current firmware: 2.29

Port: usb2 (default)
Data channel: 6
Info channel: 3

Status: call in progress
PIN Status: no password required
Functionality: full
GPRS Class: A - GPRS & GSM simultaneous
Manufacturer: Sierra Wireless, Incorporated
Model: MC8790
Revision: K2_0_7_35AP C:/WS/FW/K2_0_7_35AP/MSM6290/SRC 2010/03/04 17:37:08
Current operator: RO Vodafone RO
Access technology: 3G

0 R name="ppp-out1" max-mtu=1500 max-mru=1500 mrru=disabled port=usb2
data-channel=6 info-channel=3 apn="internet.vodafone.ro" pin=""
user="internet.vodafone.ro" password="vodafone" profile=default
phone="" dial-command="ATDT" modem-init="" null-modem=no
dial-on-demand=no add-default-route=yes use-peer-dns=yes
keepalive-timeout=30 allow=pap,chap,mschap1,mschap2

Worked perfect from the start, configured using GUI (winbox), connected just the main antenna. Already 2 days without disconnection, reconnecting automatically after power loss.

Hi,

Ghiooo, is it really mandatory the use of: user="internet.vodafone.ro" and password="vodafone".

I ask this because normally i use this SIM card with my USB3G pen and it doesn´t ask for USER or PASSWORD only PIN.

Can you post me a log of a connection of your MC8790 just to second check the behaviour of my MC8755.

best regards

It isn't mandatory for some operators and their smart sim cards, but it is safer to use them, in my country the old name of the Vodafone network was Connex and this name is still broadcasted, with the same network id, because there are still some old sim cards active in the network (i guess this is the reason). To avoid any problem i entered the APN, username and password, not to mention that i will use another APN and another username, the sim does not "know" about it, with a static ip, if i don't enter it, i can not use my static IP. I'll post tomorrow some logs, if it helps, and i recommend to use your APN, user and Password.

Hi,

How can i know which DATA CHANNEL and INFO CHANNEL to use on the config?

At the moment my configurations are:

# NAME TYPE MTU L2MTU
0 R ether1 ether 1500 1526
1 X wlan1 wlan 1500
2 R tmn internet ppp-out
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flags: X - disabled, I - invalid, D - dynamic
# ADDRESS NETWORK BROADCAST INTERFACE
0 ;;; default configuration
192.168.88.1/24 192.168.88.0 192.168.88.255 ether1

B - blackhole, U - unreachable, P - prohibit
# DST-ADDRESS PREF-SRC GATEWAY DISTANCE

2 ADC 192.168.88.0/24 192.168.88.1 ether1 0
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have some strange issue with the DIAL UP ON DEMAND, whenever i untick it and apply changes, the status of the interface "tmn internet" passes from R (running) to blank... I have no idea what this means, and normally from what i have read all users, have this option unticked. Any ideas on this?

Best regards

Hi ppl,

More info...

When i use the terminal of winbox with the PPP-client interface disabled i can check that the MC8755 is working.
In this case i used:

SCAN command
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flags: C - current, A - available, F - forbidden
OPERATOR CODE ACCESS-TECHNOLOGY SIGNAL-STRENGH
A vodafone P 26801 GSM compact
A P OPTIMUS 26803 GSM compact
C vodafone P 26801 3G -1
A P TMN 26806 GSM compact
A P TMN 26806 3G
A P OPTIMUS 26803 3G
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INFO command
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
status: "ready"
pin-status: "waiting for network personalization PIN"
functionality: "minimum"
gprs-class: "ERROR"
manufacturer: "Sierra Wireless, Inc."
model: "MC8755"
revision: "U1_2_45MCAP G:/WS/FW/U1_2_45MCAP/MSM6275/SRC 2006/10/04 17:52:27"
serial-number: "358635001331280"
current-operator: "Limited Service"
access-technology: "3G"
signal-strengh: -1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see the MC8755 can find the 3 portuguese mobile operators (TMN, OPTIMUS, VODAFONE).
In the info i cannot find anything strange, can anyone find?

Can anyone help me, i´m stuck...
I´m still having problems with the topics i mentioned in the previous posts...

Thank you

Hi, i have the same problem with my MC8781, i tried to upgrade firmware, but Windows XP wont see the card...
In my RB411U, all i get is "modem hunged up". I have a RB433 with Huawei E220 modem, and it is working perfectly!

@lmdthel: Do you have a link to the right and latest firmware for MC8781?

pin-status: "waiting for network personalization PIN"
It is waiting some PIN code.

Have you tried to disable sim-card pin using a normal phone just to be sure it is not causing problem?

But I think your Sierra card could be operator locked. So it will work only with that operator card whos network it is locked.

You can find more information about operator locks by googling or from wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_lock

Probably going deeper in unlocking could be against this forum rules.. And I don't have experience so I can't tell more than wikipedia says.
