Router stops transferring

Thu Nov 26, 2009 11:44 pm

I have an rb433 (v4.2) installed at a remote location (router only). Randomly it stops transmitting any data requiring a reboot. Today I went to the location and noticed that even the though i could not ping it on either wan (ether1) or LAN (ether3) side i was able to connect to the unit via mac using Winbox. My question is, what should i be looking at? Could something on the network be causing this unit to behave this way, maybe something within the firewall that doesn't rear it's head at other sites? I did try unplugging each side to see if i could ping the other but had no success. After a reboot the unit seems to come back. It all seems rather random, month can go by, and the logs don't show any problems. Last thing in the log is DHCP lease messages. We have about 6 other sites setup almost identical to this one. The exception being the networks. So before I go too crazy i was hoping to get some ideas on what steps i should start with. To isolate hardware being an issue i have replaced the unit for another but if hardware isn't the issue..

The network behind the router is natted. 10.10.59.0/24
The Wan side is a routable address on a /29 network.

Thanks,

Rae.

I have had a similar issue. i was using a rb600 with a high powered compex card. the the router would operate fine until i put some serious load on it @ high speeds, e.g. form lan to wan it would work for about 5min - 60min and then freeze, no ping nothing. i would restart it and it would be fine again. it would work for as long as i did not put high loads on it for more than 5min. i had some success by lowering the output power of the cards -20db and changing the maximum transmission speeds to 5mb, it would last a lot longer before a freeze up. 30-120min under max load. I tried changing power adapters to a 48v with no success. I changed the cards into a different router and same thing happened. I came to the conclusion that the card was damaged perhaps by a electrical storm.

maybe try a scheduled reboot. if time is the issue.

I hope this helps.

Cheers Paul
