XR3 / RB411 compatability problem.

Wed Jan 13, 2010 8:39 pm

Hello all,

Customer calls. We go onsite and login the mikrotik. Its not connected. I do a scan and see it at -57 signal. I do a system reboot and still nothing. I waited 2 minutes and still nothing. I unplugged the unit for 2 minutes. I plugged it back in and when I logged in its connected and works great. This is happening to about 9 customers. Also I notice some customers said they have lost power some time that week. Shouldn't a "/System reboot" fix this? I always have to unplug the unit for 2 minutes.

Anyone else having this issue?

Hardware:
RB411
Routeros 4.1
XR3-3.7
ARC enclosure.
24i power supply

Power supply?

I've had some odd issues with cheaper power supplies and SR9 or XR9.

I use the 18i and the 24i power supplies. As far as I know they are the best out there. The have surge protection built in. Do you agree?

I haven't had any problems with the 24i yet, however, the 18v POE's don't seem to have enough amperage for high power cards. I have had issues with 18v and SR9 and XR9.

I haven't tried the XR3 yet, so I couldn't say. All three are high draw cards though.

My previous experience was if the adapter was plugged up, then attached to the CPE or AP, it would work. If power was lost or if it was unplugged then plugged back in, it wouldn't power on properly. Leave the adapter plugged to AC then reattach to the CPE/AP, it worked fine. The 18v adapters just could not provide the needed amps immediately.

Just my experiences, not exactly matching your problem, but its a bit of info that may help.

Weird, I dont have any issues with XR9 cards and 18i. But we dont go over 150 ft. So we dont get voltage drop.

Do you know of any other brands that does the 3GHz? I only know of XR3 and our F36. I would like to do a comparison with other brands since we're only comparing w/ the XR3 and I don't find it a fair comparison unless there is at least another one.

XR3 was the first 3.65ghz every made I believe. I wouldn't try to use anything else. Plus it works with Mikrotik.

Hi Dallas,
As I mentioned to you earlier via e-mail, I thought I would share this too. Besides the power of the higher powered cards, they are also very sensitive. While some cards are able to withstand a higher voltage without damaging the cards, it's easier to damage the 3GHz cards. This is why I mentioned in another post that the first step is always to "Connect the antenna, then power on" I know it's a simple rule, but people tend to forget at times.

And yes, XR3 was the first 3.65GHz card ever made. My boss was the former co-founder of UBNT so he had a hand in developing some of their products. In any case, there's been a price drop for the XR3 probably b/c of our release (that's just a guess). Either way, I think competition is good for the end customer as there is no monopoly and it makes everyone work that much harder for better products. I'm sure for any product, you're always juggling between quality and price. As I said, I'm happy to give you a sample.

But if you do know of any other 3ghz cards...I would like to know about them so I can compare them.

XR3 is the only mini-pci card that I currently know of. However you can buy lots of fully built customer side radios. That you cant remove the card inside. I am guessing you are not looking for that though. Right?

Hi Dallas,
Yes we are looking into it. But there are many players already and the problem w/ "already built" is that they lock you into the device and you can't really customize and/or replace parts. These are probably small issues anyway and it just boils down to juggling price & quality at some point. Something might be cheap but breaks after a year (everyone's toleration of something is different, especially if it worked so well in the past)

Anyone that asks, I'm willing to give out samples cause I understand the hesitation.

In any case, you're always welcome to e-mail me for any direct questions or issues you may have.
