First Setup

Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:25 am

Greetings,

I'm setting up a small network for a remote monitering system with an FTP server for a project for the local university. We purchased a RB493 to act as the router in the project and I'm having problems trying to get it setup properly.

I have a wireless modem connected to interface ethernet1 and 5 data devices connected to 5 of the other ethernet interfaces. I need the RB493 to destination NAT to the various data devices and additionally source NAT the FTP server (I believe). I fairly certain that I have the NAT configured correctly but if i connect my laptop to one of the remaining empty ethernet interfaces I cannot connect to the internet nor can I access any of the data devices remotely.

I'm fairly certain that I have missed something when setting up the router, possibly the routing table as I haven't touched that (yet, next thing on the list). Overall this is a fairly simple project and would have been ok with a consumer grade router save the power issues we have (solar in one of the worst places in the world for solar) and this board was reccomended to us.

Point, I had one. Ohh right. I'm reading the wiki and everything else i can find on the website to help me setup this router properly but as i said earlier i'm not getting very far and I'm starting to feel rather lost. If someone could post what I would need to put where to get the system working, generically would be wonderful.

(system recap, internet line into ether1, 5 additional devices. The 5 devices all live on the same network (192.168.0.XXX) and are in various ethers (i think 2,3,4,8 and 9), one needs to be FPT capable (call it 8))

Thank You,
one slightly out of his knowledge base programmer.

Hi swiftcreek,

If memory serves me right, I don't think you can have one same subnet for more than one interface. So each interface should serve different subnets, hence the "routing" task of the router. I dunno, I could be wrong. Memory's kinda foggy lately.

In your situation, try to use a switch plugged in to ether2, and plug in your other devices to the switch.
That's what I would do.

Cheers,

Well the reason for the router is getting the FTP server to work correctly. if we could like without the FTP we wouldn't have added a router and just continued with a dumb switch.

Adding an additional switch is simply not possible, this is a low power system and we're already at the max draw we can supply. Also, the RB493 has a port-switch function I discovered last night after posting the thread and just got that setup and working properly. so the devices are communicating with each other as a single 192.168.0 network.

What I need to do now (I think) is setup ether1 as the WAN connection (with a diffrent network space) and make sure the NAT between the 2 networks is correct. I might setup DHCP later just to have it working, but thats not really nessisary for the project as everything has a staticly defined IP. The DHCP would only be useful if someone had to plug directly into the network to make adjustments.

if anyone has any advice to point me in the right direction in the wiki would be great.
one still slightly out his knowledge base, but getting somewhere programmer

Great that you have it working.

Now, about your next question, I assume you have read the basic setup guide in the wiki? If so, I would need to look at your current NAT rules, so can you post them here please?
