Hi Guys

Quick question before I upgrade a highsite that only allows me 1 antenna for backhaul. What is better for each end?

1X1 MIMO with an R-52N

or

Normal R-52 card

I'd use one of the dual pol dish antennas, something like this http://ubnt.com/products/dish.php

You can do 2x2 MIMO on PtP using a single dish.

But even if you don't do MIMO 802.11n still has advantages over plan .11g/a

Based on what you mentioned, I would probably use the R52H instead of R52N b/c of the inherent issues with N. There are definitely advantages for sure. But as you can see on the forums, there are still many issues with N and it's just not yet ready for a backhaul in my opinion (backhauls should be very stable and proven IMHO)

Netrat is right about the dish, the ubnt dish is pretty good.

But the Jirous JRC-29 Duplex is much better !

The only downside of running an 802.11n card is that it will require ROS 4.x to be recognized. Since I use nstream on all of my backhauls, I am not sure that I would be happy running an OS that still appears to have nstream problems. If you downgrade to ROS 3.30, your R52n will not be recognized. So you can't even run it in 802.11a mode with ROS 3.xx.

I am very happy with my R52 based backhauls that have been running for several years.

I'll probably put up an 802.11n PtP backhaul this Spring when our weather warms up, but it won't be used for critical traffic until it has been running successfully for a few months.

If you are using 5 GHz, the R5H is better than the R52

Thanks for your replies guys...I think the dual polarilsed antenna is the best option for a single antenna ptp link...

Now for the sectors on my highsites:
Could I run a 2x MIMO antenna on my highsite and then run a single 1xMIMO antenna at the CPE?

ie this on the highsite: http://www.miro.co.za/detail.aspx?pid=982&p=2&sp=&spp= and then a normal R-52N at the clients side?

My thinking is that it would work better than a normal 802.11a/b/g connection but not as good as 802.11n? ie somewhere in between?

PS roc-noc, I agree with the nstreme issue. However, increasing the hw-retries to about 10-15 seamed to improve things

What is your CCQ, ping times like during peak usage? Would like to know why you didn't opt for a dedicated card, is it b/c of the cost? Or was the 17-18dBm good enough? Just want to know your thoughts
