I have been trying to convince my 3G adapter to work with Router OS. I am using a Verizon USB760, also known as a Novatel MC760, or as a MC760 (Verizon) adapter. Its connected to a RB-230 which recognizes it without any trouble. I can see it as a USB device and I can use serial-terminal to communicate with it on channel 0. Where I am running into problems is keeping it connected. It will connect for 5-20 pings, in which time I can even pull up a web page, but it will suddenly stop pinging for no explainable reason at all. The log will show that the adapter is still connected. I am successfully receiving an IP address, gateway, and DNS via the PPP connection. I have it set to dial #777, data and info channels are set to 0, and I am not using an int string. I suspect the problem may be with the lack of int string or with the channels not being correct, however channel 0 is the only channel I have been able to get a response out of. I know it has to be using at least two channels though. Could the default dial command be wrong? Has anybody found int strings that work with this model as traditional modem string do not?

I am also having trouble with a new Verison USB760 3G card.

I activated the modem in my laptop, so I know that the device works with the Verizon network.

After I install it into either an RB411U or RB433UAH running v3.30, the system hangs when running the /port commands (e.g. /port print). After several minutes, the command completes. I am unable to setup a ppp-client entry, also due to system hangs.

The supported hardware document lists the Novatel U760 as being supported under v3.30

However, the above post says the USB760 is the same as the MC760, which is supported under v4.5.

Is the Novatel USB760 the same thing as the Novetel U760? Should this work under v3.30, or do I need to upgrade to v4.5?

Which routeros version are you using? If you have an init string, that would be useful as well.

I use 4X code for all my 3G cards. Rel 4.2 and 4.6 (Test version) are the best releases I have seen for 3G/4G..
support and stability.

I would look for 4.2 for availability, and would look to 4.6 when released to pickup the newer cards...

In short, upgrade the RouterOS to 4X... and give it a go..

I am also using ROS 4.x, at the moment I am using 4.5. From what I have found I believe the hardware between our two 3G cards is probably the same or really close. I haven't been able to find any int string that has had any amount of success. In fact, every single string I have tried just makes the connection fail a little faster. I've done several searches online and even called Verizon to get more info... all without success. The Cradle Point routers specifically have support for the cards, so I am certain that they could work ROS as well. Once, we figure it out, we will have to be sure to post it so others don't have the same stumbling block.

4.5 for me was a bit unstable...
Mikrotik said that there is no differance between 4.2 and 4,5 but...
4.2 stable 3G 4.5 not so much... also turn on ppp-client debug mode.
(see logging) see if it isnt the tower dropping you...

I HAVE seen this before.. I used an ext antenna and it helped quit a bit..

I will try the upgrade to 4.x and see what happens. According to the supported hardware document, the MC760 is only supported under v4.5, so I am not sure v4.2 will work.

Additionally, it's not clear to me whether, from the RouterOS point of view, the "USB760" I got from Verizon is closer to the "U760" or the "MC760"; whether they are all the same, all different. If anyone knows, please post.


Concerning your disconnect issue: My previous Verizon modem (UM175), freqeuently dropped connection with the tower until I filtered out any 'invalid' packets going to that interface (mainUpstream):
I read about this on another thread on this site, and it worked like a charm for me; the link immediately became rock solid. In your orignal post, you mention that the adapter is still connected, so maybe this is not relevent to your case.

Like the previous poster said, turn on ppp-client debug, if you haven't already done so. I found this output very useful.

I have upgraded to v4.5 and find that its support of the Verizon USB760 modem on RB411U and RB433UAH is not terribly stable. Perhaps this is what the previous poster was talking about. Based on that advice, perhaps I will try to fallback to v4.2

Under v4.5, there are certain commands (/port and /int ppp-client) that can hang the user interface when the USB760 is installed. Once the command is entered, one either gets no response, or the response comes some minutes later. Cycling power is required to restore proper operation; a 'system reboot' is not sufficient.

If you can get the card configured, it will successfully move data. After that, if you run any kind of int ppp-client commands (e.g. print), the user interface freezes and data stops moving across the interface. A '/system reboot' does not clear the issue, one must cycle power.

From the supported hardware point of view, it seems like (Verizon USB760 != Novatel U760 != Novatel MC760), and since the USB760 is not listed, perhaps it is not, if fact, supported?

So...has anyone successfully used the Verizon USB760 on either the RB411U or RB433UAH?

Note: I had been using the UM175 with Verizon with no problems, but when I tried to order more was told they had been EOLed and that for now the USB760 was the only USB modem that Verizon supports.

I have not independently verified that but, if true, would put RouterOS+Verizon users in a bit of a bind, if the USB760 is not supported.

At first, I was using a RB-230 with ROS 4.5. I have since switched to ROS 4.2. Under ports it shows that there is 4 channels available, and I have tried extensively to get a response out of any channel other than just 0. I believe something is wrong with the info channel because no matter what I have it set to (0-3) I never get anything from the info or scan buttons on the PPP-Client interface. The data channel is also set to 0 and that seems to correct as it is the only channel I can query from serial-terminal or use to connect. Here is a copy of the log. I unfortunately, do not quite know what to make of it.

The commands I use for setting up the UM175 are the same as I am using for the USB760:
Really, quite a simple setup. No special profile, dial command, or modem init string required.

As for your debug output, it looks similar to mine, before I added the filter command.

I am not sure what all the debug messages mean, but it looks like the session comes up OK (the "system,info dns changed" log message is about the last step in bringing the link up), but then the tower requests the link be terminated ("rcvd LCP TermReq").

My understanding, which may be incorrect, is that the cell network is very sensitive to things like invalid packets, and will terminate the link if it doesn't like the packets coming from your router.

In my case, adding the filter rule stopped the flow of invalid packets and the tower immediately stopped requesting that the link be terminated, and now allows the link to stay up indefinitely.

BTW I heard back from Mikotik support shortly after contacting them, and they are looking into the USB760 issue. I will post again, when there is progress to report.

I have heard back from Mikrotik support, and they indicate they will try to optimize the driver in v4.7 in order to support the USB760.

They say that the modem ports respond very slowly.

So it sounds like the Novatel USB760 != Novatel U760, and that the USB760 is not supported under v4.5, at least for the Routerboard 400 series.

(To be clear, the USB760 is not listed on the Supported Hardware list.)

FYI the supported hardware list is purely user maintained, so if you get some card working, you can add it to that list.

Just thought Id post. I just tried a Verizon 760 USB adapter on an RB411U and it has been connected for 9 hours straight w/o a problem.

EDIT: I am running 5.0b1 on it. Havent tried an older version.

I recived A Verizon USB760 last week for a "One off" for a client that uses the Sprint 598U as a rule..

The 1st card would NOT Auth.. (Spent 2+ hrs on support with Verizon, but their system would NOT Auth the card)
The 2nd card was installed into a Windows box, then Authed.. (and firmware updated)..

I then put it in to a "Blackbird", and it connected with out issue..

I have been seeing 2+ Mb from this device.. (With an Ext 13 dbi Ant.)

Stable as a rock....

No special init string or settings...

(Remove the APN = "internet").. Dial string and number = "ATDT" , "#777"

Lock and load !!

I would like to confirm that this is verifiable on my setup also. Must cycle power (bad) to get RB back active. Running RB411U, ROS 4.5, and Verizon USB760. Link comes up immediately and is stable until you issue any type command (via WinBox, have not tried CLI) after the link is up and moving data. I have also had the USB760 disconnect and hang after simply initiating a connection via WinBox to the 411U. You can connect to the 411U but it shows no interfaces at that point so....hard reboot required.

Anyone have any additional input on this? I have been reading all the threads. This issue is not about connecting PPP, its about 411U hanging after the PPP session is active.

Pretty much have worked with all ideas that have been listed on threads with USB/PPP topics. The PPP session is stable but the RB is not when you issue it a command.

If anything unclear or I need to add more info, I will be glad to assist in solving this problem. The USB760 is very popular 3G modem here and I need it to be stable with the 411U.

I am having the same problem you describe. After working many hours trying to understand how the 4xxU devices are handling this USB760 and calling Verizon tech support today here is what I have learned:

1) The problem is still not solved. I thought the IP filter would help solve the problem but it didn't. No packets ever hit that filter.

2) Same 4xxU and AT&T USBConnect Mercury have no issues at all. I've got my AT&T card in this unit now while I type this and surf the web with no issues and it's been up for 24 hours now.

3) I have tested this with all 4.x code and 5.xBetaX code. Same issues. I ultimately don't think this is a problem with MT but rather something that is happening with packets that get to the Verizon network it doesn't like. The Verizon tech called them "leaked" packets.

4) Verizon said the reason for the disconnect was the leaked packets. Although this guy couldn't explain it to me in exact detail he made it sound like a packet got on the network (like OSPF) that it recognized as "bad" and dropped the PPP session. Over and over again!

5) This doesn't happen if you don't try to route/NAT packets from another network or interface. In other words, I can connect to the Internet with the card and the session will stay up so long as nothing is routed through the MT. Useless, I know, but it's an observation. As long as the packet originates from MT it's good. If it comes from another computer via NAT, bad.

Verizon told me they would hook me up with someone who could help guide me to a solution. I'll keep you posted on what I find and if I come up with any other observations in the mean time.

One thing I noticed after hours of working on this is my NAT rule was not showing packets increasing. It was always 0 (zero).

So, I deleted the NAT rule and recreated an exact same rule and the numbers started increasing and the connection is now working.

With the old rule in place you can CLEARLY see that the NAT rule was not working and that RFC1918 addresses were going to Verizon's network. When they see a bunch of these they kill the PPP connection. With the NAT working this does not occur.

I don't know how I got this rule in this weird state but it's very replicable at this point. I have an old config that I can boot to and see the situation occur with torch. I delete the rule, recreate the rule and NAT begins to work.

This has got to be some type of MIOS bug.

Yes definitely NATing....can not bridge with the PPP usb.

We also tried to setup Verizon Wireless USB 760 with ROS 6.10 but at the moment without success.
Our settings are: We also tried different channels, usernames and passwords, modem init, dial commands.

Modem work fine via Broadband2Go software.
In Verizon Access Manager I can't see the modem to change WWAN settings.
