Is it possible to change the default dude beep sound to something longer and more dramatic?

Yes!
Open the 'beep' notification and click on Type. Then select 'sound' from the list. You will probably need to Import some sound files.

I do see the Type field, but how do I load the sound?

Once you have Imported your sound files they will appear in the Sound drop down.
There will not be an option to select a sound until you have completed the Import.

Sorry for being so n00b, but how do I import the sound files?

Open the files list from the contents menu, drag and drop the sound file into the root of that folder or click on add... then modify the notification.
You can also place MIBs, fonts and graphics in the appropriate folders and use them.
