SCSI and SAS support in RouterOS

There are many different adapters and drivers, if you would have to choose, what would be the most popular SCSI/SAS controller model to support? What server class hardware is the most popular in your area, the most available and reasonably priced? If we would add support for one or two controllers, which ones would they be?

Please share your experience and opinion

At the very least, support the megaraid, megaraid_sas drivers and 3ware drivers.

They will cover most SCSI/SAS RAID controllers available. For example, almost all Dell PERC SCSI controllers use the megaraid drivers, and all the Dell PERC SAS (eg. 6/6i) controllers use the megaraid_sas drivers, and HP use LSI controllers which also use the megaraid drivers. The next most common one I know of and have seen is the 3ware cards, which are quite often used in custom, home-made or industrial chassis. These are very mature, stable drivers and should pose no problems.

Suport for megaraid.ko and ahci.ko would be nice.

If deploying x86 hardware we always use Dell or Axiomtech and this will cover both of them.

Support for Intel SATA for CDROM installs would be helpful. Currently if you boot the ISO image on an x86 system with Intel chipset/SATA and SATA DVD drive, it gives a 'FATAL ERROR: no CD-ROM found', although it does show 'Found hard drive as SATA 0' so its loading the controller, but currently seems to only support IDE CDROM drives. Motherboards don't come with IDE controllers anymore!

Loading drivers

Looking for harddrives...

Found harddrive as SATA 0

FATAL ERROR: no CD-ROM found
Press ENTER to reboot

I have this server:

4 x Dell PowerEdge 750
4 x Dell PowerEdge 850
4 x Dell PowerEdge 1750
2 x Dell PowerEdge 1850
3 x Dell PowerEdge 2950
2 x Dell PowerEdge R310

I would like to run Mikrotik Router OS on these servers all with DELL Perc RAID controller.
It is very important for me to have raid support in router os.

I hope you insert this feature in the next release....

Could we have the drivers included for the lenovo thinkserver

this seems to use the LSI SAS1064E controller which i can only assume is not supported as of yet, or if it is the driver do not seem to work,

I have tried to install using netinstall and using the 5.2beta.iso,

Netinstall - crashes with the error no harddrives found FATAL ERROR

The ISO - Crashes before it actually loads any drivers or looks for HDD's

Many thanks

I no longer have an open server with the supported hardware..

We are a HP shop...

I HAD a couple of Dells (2900 and 2950) but they got shnagged before I could load them...

The 2900 ended up at my house as my VMWare host, and the 2950 ended up as a remote access server (term Serv) for work...

HP SCSI / SAS / SATA array adapters I can test...

It took me a while to find a server recently that actually was able to boot RouterOS. Most of the devices I would want to install RouterOS on are HP servers, and they all run some sort of SAS.

I think it is not a good way that mikrotik wants everyone request their drivers before releasing major version but after that they simply says not supported .
We can see there are a lot of driver requests every day . i suggest two ways to overcome such problems . The driver support should not limit only to pre major versions time .

1- There should be at least an API for other developers to release their own drivers.
2- Mikrotik release some driver files independently from mikrotik minor versions and users may download them from mikrotik site and simply upload it to RouterOS .

Please,

Add these scsi drivers, we have a bunch of hp servers, and i´m curretly running mikrotik on these via USB, but i´m afraid about kingston thumb drive reliability. and these servers only have that storage controller that doesnt have legacy mode.

ppl with DELL servers .. i'm trying a new RoS pre release that supports HP SAS Controller.(Smart Array)

i created via controler a Logical drive but mikrotik doesnt recognized it. ppl with dell megaraid controller , what you did to have the disk recognized in mikrotik?

with the drivers, i shouldnt have problem with any kind of raid i did, becouse the Operational system will see the logical drives created in SaS controller as an physical disk. :(

We have about 30 Hp servers and 12 of them are these big ml350 servers with that controller. these where bought to be our core routers. 2gbits internet feed :(

We added some SCSI drivers in v5beta2, can somebody please test with a demo key or 24h trial?

megaraid
Please include driver for SCSI adapter 'Adaptec aic7899' (Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers)
I have a lot of this servers.
I PROMISE to test this release and send the FULL test report

Thnx
I just tried V5.0rc1 on my PowerEdge 2650. I'm loading from a CD created using the .iso image. The install cannot find the hard drive. I tried with the controller in SCSI mode ( and formatted the drive ) and in RAID mode ( formatting the drive, and creating a container. ) No joy either way.

Is there another version I should try ?

Thanks,

Todd

Tested V5.0rc1 on DL380 G3. Controller not recognized.

I saw the 5i controller is not supported right now.
Is there any time-line to have support for HP Smart Array 5i controller?

We are trying to run some fiber gige in a reliable platform. We do need some popular scsi controller support of HP in Mikrotik.

Also, adding DELL and IBM scsi controllers won't hurt.

Thank you.

All we can do, is include the standard driver. If it doesn't work, we can't do much.

Hi normis.

Based on a quick count from everyony posting in this thread I'd say the next driver for inclusion should likely be the cciss driver.

I have hardware on hand to test that with.

We have also lots of HP Proliant Servers with Smart Array Controllers inside.

If you need some tryouts or drivertests for the Smart Array Series we can help out with some time and hardware (-:

Today I am at a school with abaout 4500 pupils to implement traffic optimization on base of mikrotik but the server is a DL360 with Smart Array *grrr*

Hello,

I've tried the 5.0rc5 on vmware using both the LSI and Bus Logic SCSI adapters and no luck 'can't find harddisk'. Maybe it doesn't have these drivers in this release. The version you mention above is an earlier beta release. If you think this one has a SCSI adapter please send a link to it and I'll gladly download and test.

Cheers

Danny

Got a Dell PowerEdge 2850 at work, Doesn't understand the Dell PERC 4 card in it. (VID=0x1028, DID=0x0013)

I have a 3 Ware 9650se unit kicking around at work recently, I'll plug it in with a few 80gb hdds and see what it finds. :)

For the record, this server seems to like the 4GB SB stick I used to boot it. :)

Is there any thought to iSCSI? Seems it would be less problematic since it's software. And it's a standard. And cheaper overall for an administrator to manage/maintain.

I use a managed array system. So this would be optimal.
It's nice to be able to extend my space as needed, create snapshots if required.. and oh yea.. get the FBI off my back when they have a CALEA request by giving them a snapshot copy off of the array.

any news about porting the CCISS driver?

for the the archive: the linux driver is backward compatible to ALL HP SmartArray controller.
There generic driver would work with SA6xx, SA 5i, SA 6i SCSI controller as well as
SA E200(i), P400/P410i.
If the driver is not many years old, it would support also P600 and P800 controllers (however, i'm sure you will not pay that extra fee for a router...)

So, please include the driver (if it's not already included in ROS 5.0). That will allow use to use a refurbished dual-xeon, hot swap HDD, hot swap power supply for few hundred bucks!
ps: what eats few hundred watts...

HP DL380G3 (SA5i) just tested: netinstall did not found the raid volume
we also tried to net-install to USB drive, worked well (however cannot boot, since BIOS has no option for USB boot (?))
That mean HP DL380G3 completely unusable for Mikrotik (it has no internal power connector for standard devices, so SATA/Flash cannot work)

try to install on another computer. I was just setting up a new router, NetInstall didn't see my USB Flash. I connected it to another motherboard, installed there - and then my main platform successfully booted up from that flash. NetInstall uses limited set of drivers

as i said, install is completed well, but DL380G3 unable to boot from USB (only virtual USB drive via ILO). I will try to boot the installed stick on another box :-)

ps: what if I:
- netinstall the machine to a supported platform
- use Knoppix (or other live system) to mount the rootfs
- copy the x86 binary of the cciss driver (from a same kernel version)

would it boot? maybe someone did it? (what keeps away Mikrotik to make package like binary of common raid drivers?)

hmmm... i think, it can load initrd, but without ccisss driver cannot mount the rootfs

i will give a try for install to desktop PC (ide/sata), and dd over network to server by live linux.
would report the results :-)

+1 to cciss (HP Smart Array)

By the way, I've found a way to boot from USB on servers that doesn't support it - like HP G3. You have to create a custom boot manager on CD, which boots USB drive afterwards - it sound complicated, but really isn't - I have several of those servers running without any problems.

By the way, when Radius server (with Userman) is run from USB drive, there are many problems - timeouts and so on. Which is one of the reasons we desperately need cciss drivers. Please at least announce your intentions - will such a driver be available at some point in time or not.

jjx: try to install ROS5 (preferably latest)
trol4o: HP G3 cannot boot from USB. (BIOS not support is) yes, it can be booted from CD (and from CD, probably USB drive can be asked for boot as rootfs) but, i think
it does not worth the work (and have many additional failure points, like CD and USB).

I've just take some math, and if you need to pay for power, it's much better to have a brand new intel 1U server, that have a G3 server. (intel entry servers eats 1/3 of the power as HP G3 servers - and i think double CPU power, even with core i3)

wpeople:

I don't have to pay for power anywhere, so G3 is a good choice. About booting from CD, then USB - it's very simple once you get the hang of it, I've prepared an ISO image for that task, simply burn it to CD and off it goes.

Anyway, the only time the CD is used is at boot time. I have several of those servers working for a long time and never had any problems.

Still waiting for SCSI driver though :)

Dear

PorwerEdge bought a Dell R710 with the following settings:

-01 Intel ® Xeon ® 5500 series Dual Core;

- Intel-5520;

- PERC 6i RAID Controller and SAS 6/iR;

-02 SAS HDD 250GB 1500rpm in RAID 1;

-Memory-8GB DDR3-1333;

-Card-Network Interface Broadcom ® NetXtreme ® II 57.711 two-door, direct connection, 10 Gbit Ethernet and PCI-Express and flush iSCSI TOE

But when trying to install the new RouterOS v5.7 Stable during the installation of the error: "FATAL ERROR: No hard disk"

We are very concerned because this router is the edge of our network, and have millions of customers who are depending on this change.
We are customers for a long time and ask the MikroTik verify that an immediate solution to this problem.

Here you can find models of controllers used by Dell in order to streamline the process for the new update with the correctness of the MikroTik:
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/topi ... =en&cs=555

Does anyone have any suggestions of what can be done? Ja I disabled the RAID setup Dell put the same error persists.

Please help me! :(

Also if the GigEther drivers will allow L2MTUs greater than 1500 ?

HP DL360 G4p works great....

Keep in mind this is a SATA model... so,,,,

But it sees the onboard NICs and hardware just fine....

I added a 2nd supply and CPU and a 4 port broadcom 64Bit PCI and it is stable as a rock...

These are inexpensive and not too hard to find...

Is there any chance for adding support for Inter raid and Adaptec raid. I have just install MtOS 5.11 on supermicro ATOM based and it have both Inter and Adaptec raid on but I cannot use it because mikrotik does not recognize raid volume.

it would be great to have 2 SAS disks on raid for security reasons

I tried to install version 5.14 on my Dell PowerEdge R610.
Try installing from CD-ROM.
Try to install via USB.
Try installing using NetInstall.
In all these ways failed to install the system.

Remove the HD I put in a common PC, install the system and when I put the HD in my DELL R610 system remains in "LOADING".

Install version 5.11 and is equal, the system remains in "LOADING".

Any suggestions?

I installed the system on a Flash Memory (USB) and the place my DELL R610, boot and OS system: rip well but does not detect the disks but if you see the Dell SAS controller.

If I do the same with the HD system will not boot, stays in LOADING.

Attachment system images installed on USB flash memory in the Dell R610.

I would agree with the megaraid.. I would say that 8 out of 10 servers that I order or build include an LSI controller.

On that note, most of them are being deployed for VMWare ESXi now. It makes management MUCH simpler and makes better use of resources. I would personally like to see the RouterOS for x86 have a vmware tools package before SAS/SCSI support.
