Mikrotik Management for iPhone Available Now
Posted: Tue Feb 23, 2010 12:31 pm
by valleyman86
I am working on an application that will let you log into a Mikrotik and manage it as if you were using Winbox. I will update this post as I get more completed to keep you up to date.
The app should support all Mikrotiks from 3.20 to 4.40 as this is what I am testing it with. Unfortunately I do not have the ability nor knowledge to test every possible tool or interface but I have ways of getting ideas on how stuff works.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyzXoFXgnKA
App Store:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mikroman ... 04767?mt=8
Update 02-24-2010:
I would like to do beta testing soon for interfaces primarily. I would like people to test them on different versions of routeros and let me know what I am missing or if it is displaying invalid data. I can't test it all because well I don't have access to Mikrotiks (for testing on) on all versions from 3.20-4.40. Most of my tests are me adding the interface with default settings and then testing against that. Most of my testing is done in 4.40.
If you want to participate please send me a PM or go to my website (
http://www.murderdev.com) and email me with your device UDID. Also if you can give me a good reason why you would be a good beta tester that would be great. I only have so many devices I can register per year.
To do this, connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes. In iTunes, select your device in the ‘Devices’ section and navigate to the Summary tab. Click on the Serial Number label to reveal the Identifier field and the 40 character UDID. Copy the UDID to your clipboard.
Update 02-25-2010
All the interfaces (that I am going to do for the first release) are done. They aren't all tested but I'm fairly sure they are ok. I have finished implementing VirtualAp detection vs WLAN as well as support for Prism VS Atheros cards for Wireless. I think it's pretty badass.

I will be doing that beta testing very very soon after I get some stuff cleaned up and organized for a closed release.
Update 08-18-2010
Available in the app store now. Currently very limited but has a lot of info for interface monitoring.

Very good Idea, will it be available in Appstore?
I would suggest something like "iWinbox" or "iROS"
Keep it going, i will PURCHASE it!

Secure mode? Or otherwise encrypted?
Re: Mikrotik Management from iPhone (soon)
Posted: Wed Feb 24, 2010 3:48 am
by valleyman86
Well its using the API so as secure as that is. It works by sending a message to the mikrotik and then the Mikrotik sends back a hash. That has is combined with the hash of the password and username and sent back to the Mikrotik for authentication. After that I believe the mikrotik will do whatever you ask via the API as long as you have permissions and are on the same IP address. That connection times out over a period of time with no activity I believe.
So to answer your question... No its not using SSL but there is some level of protection.

Apart from that you should always only be able to access the API if you are
a) in the same network (e.g. connected via WLAN)
b) connected over a secure link (e.g. via PPTP VPN)

Whats it take to port an app from the iphone to the Android OS? Just curious as no one in my area uses AT&T, and we are moving our installers to the Moto Droid to use for just about everything. Would be great to have a winbox app!

That's not true dog.
You can access from everywhere if the router you are trying to connect has internet access.

Yes, you could.
What I am saying is that you should configure the firewall so that this is not possible for security reasons.

We use 1000s of these to provide internet to customers and they get dictionary attacked all the time. No one ever gets through but its not really a big deal. They usually attack on the ssh front.

I am thinking I will be ready to beta test by tonight. I currently have 4 people interested but I would like at least 10 people for the beta test. If you are interested please contact me. Information is in the first post. You do not need an unlocked phone to participate and it should work fine on an iTouch as well as long as you are connected to a wifi network.

2 RB600s
3 RB433s
1 450G
How do you manage those 100 devices?
All I could find in the wiki with regards to this was the "Configuration Management" topic, which dealt with importing/exporting the configuration. This is tedious enough for
one device, but I cannot imagine doing that for
100 - at least not manually.
(Slightly OT)

I manage the same about of devices over a PHP+API tool I have written.
I basically only have to enter the wireless MAC-ID and it will create the necessary configuration for me, which I then can import (this takes about 1.5m per device)
After that I can control all devices via my tool
I suspect many here have done the same, some users have over 1000 RBs.

Exactly what dog said really.
If you want to manage them then well individually is how it is going to happen since you are one guy.
If you simple want to configure all of them then creating a script using the API would be your best bet. Make it so you give it all the IP addresses for the devices and then it configures them. Hell you can export that config file you were talking about and use the API to auto import it to all the devices. that is if the API allows import. I haven't tried it.

Ah, I can follow. The wiki page on Configuration Management didn't mention a scenario such as this, but the approach makes sense.
Fully automated configuration management is why I initially posted
this feature request. I just wanted to boot a vanilla Debian install so badly so I can just run cfengine on it, which in turn would install & configure all services I expected on the gateway for me (as it's done for ~30 hosts I administer currently).
I'll look into the scripting solution. Thanks for the info!

I have enough and will release it soon. I have several people though who have not givin' me their identifiers. Directions are in the first post. I need this so that I can compile the app with your iphone or itouch. You must also have OS version 3.0 or greater.
I will be compiling this today with the UDIDs I have and sending out instructions with a link to the App to those who want to participate.
Hamil:
I need your UDID. Please be sure you have an iphone or itouch with OS 3.0 or greater.
To do this, connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes. In iTunes, select your device in the ‘Devices’ section and navigate to the Summary tab. Click on the Serial Number label to reveal the Identifier field and the 40 character UDID. Copy the UDID to your clipboard.

yes, webbox "breaks" stuff if you use it at the same time with other configuration interfaces. it makes it's own kind of rules which can override existing rules. if you use Webbox, then use ONLY webbox.
WebFig however is something completely different. It will be the same as using Winbox.

Of course, it will work just like winbox, you will only need direct connection to the router. The interface will reside on RouterOS.
Not sure yet about backwards compatibiliity.

more like a downgrade. all new phones, even very cheap ones, have normal web browser.

Then where is my hotspot access through your "improved" web interface? Two of the three sections I require are not available in the new web interface.

I have always been clear about beta versions! I will not upgrade to a beta version on equipment that is in commercial use. My test unit is one of my spares. It must remain with a version that is stable.

No Go! Three attempts on two different OS/browsers. Add IE8 to the fail list. If it takes more than 3 minutes to boot, too slow. AFTER THREE MINUTES, I used Rove Mobile SSH, logged in to my router (including the portknock!), checked "/ip hotspot active" and "/ip hotspot host", and logged out. Your demo still had not finished loading.
I will not take that as a true demo of that interface. There must be something wrong. Can anyone else verify this. I would really like to see this demo!!!

Maybe last time I looked at the demo, I just had not waited long enoungh for the rest of the "home page" to load. I do see the hotspot selection on your screenshot very plain. And considering that I was there to find exactly that, I don't see how I missed it. But, as I recall from the one demo download I got to go through, there were not nearly that many selections on the home page. Let me know about the demo.

Clicking on the IP menu reveals it's submenu, just like in Winbox. Maybe you didn't click IP
Re: Mikrotik Management from iPhone (soon)

That is not where a WinBox user would look for that. But I am not a WinBox user. I use the CLI. In writing the Blackberry Java code for the directory structure, I used the same as the CLI, so, by habit, I looked there first.
Re: Mikrotik Management from iPhone (soon)

So you mean to say that this is not a submenu?
Winbox and Webfig are identical, the menu strucure is imported directly, nothing is hand made or sorted in that regard. Menu locations will be the same.

I don't know what to tell you. That is exactly the menu structure I am using, and that is exactly where I expected it when I went there originally. And to find it there at that time (not being too far into the Java code), would have pleased me greatly! ??? Now it just pleases me a lot.
ADD: Then I did good on the Java menu structure. When you login,
<admin@MikroTik>?
Anything in light blue is a menu. Anything else is performed there. Same with all other "directories".

The rest of the thread discusses webfig, the built in web management interface that in 5.0 will expose all configuration options. At that point native applications are no longer needed, and any web interface would run full screen without zoom in the iPad's browser.

Except for those that would like to support older versions. Also native applications have the benefit of supporting other features such as
- Managing many devices
- Supporting older hardware/software
- Providing tools for networking that is not built into the device
- Monitoring many devices
- The ability to support new features that are not in the current version without needing to modify anything on the device. This would be especially important in production environments. A lot of people will not and cannot upgrade to new versions especially if they are in beta still. Some versions even released as stable incorporate severe bugs that need to be taken care of and upgrading just to improve the web interface is not worth it. Simply updating Winbox or any other native app is far safer for the user.

Don't let a web interface stop you from work on a native iphone app. I personally want no part of trying to use the web interface from my iphone. I would much rather be able to add multiple devices to my iphone app and not deal with the slow web response. Not to to mention if the web interface is not optimized for iphone viewing, it's just going to be more of a pain. Fumbling around with a clumsy web interface is not something I want to deal with while im out of town and a customer needs a fix in a hurry.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support development of an iPhone app, it would be wonderful if a quality app can be developed.
But you will still need a recent version with API support, and you will need to enable API access.

Just wanted to update you that I have had no problems with your beta. I have tried it with RB150, RB153, RB450, Crossroad, RB411AR and x86 versions with ROS 2.9.51 to 5 beta without any problems. I am looking forward to more functionality to test.

I'm interested in testing this app if you have more open spots. I'll send you my UDID.

I realize I haven't gave you all much of an update recently. Been working on other projects and am no longer working for my previous company (using Mikrotik devices) anymore.
That said I really want to get this back on the road and get all my work I've done out there for you to use. So what I think I may do is release the app as is and update it as I can. This means you guys can use the current features as well as provide feedback for what you want added, changed or fixed. This is very helpful to me and the progression of the project now that I have only my personal copy of Winbox (currently 4.5 i believe) to test on. This also means that the more support the app gets the better it can become and it will progress much faster than it is currently.
The current features of the app as of now:
-Has a name. I will name is MikroManager
-Supports reading of all interfaces (as best I can tell). You can view all their settings as well as view the traffic monitor for them.
-Supports saving of devices for later access.
-Supports managing multiple devices (up to 3 currently) at the same time.
-Supports pinging devices in your list to check if they are online.

I can't wait for this to be released.
Is there any chance you could add port knocking to the next release.

Someone emailed me and suggested port knocking. I would like to make this app full of features but I will probably be forced to hire someone to help me with this as I am currently loaded with projects so It is very hard for me to get much done.

Apple contacted me because there were some small issues (one being my IP for my device changed so they couldn't test it). Anyways I fixed all that and sent it back. Sorry for the wait.

Be sure to leave reviews. Bear in mind it is not complete and I don't want to lead people on who may be expecting a lot right yet. It currently does exactly as stated in the description. As always I am open to suggestions and ideas.

Does it just do interfaces? Or all Winbox sections? The screenshots and description are so interface focused I'm slightly hesitant to purchase and see for myself.

Yes it currently only shows interfaces. If you were looking for more than that, I would hold off for now.

Yup! Crash's everytime I hit monitor status and advanced. The only usable real time data it gives without crashing is monitor traffic.

. Darn it, was really hoping to use this to align antennas up on towers...

Email me with the email address you used before as a beta tester. Tell me what you liked/disliked about the app and Ill send you a promo code.
For the crashes... Yes I would like details on how you made the app crash. If I can recreate it I will definitely fix it for ya. PM me on these boards about the crash. Don't post the details in this board. This will allow me to track them easily. Thanks.

Just purchased it - Would be great to have it show the signal strength of the wireless interface.
Or better yet, having the ability to scan on the wireless interface.

I would like to PM you about the crash but unfortunately I can't. Don't know why.
Anyway the crash occurs when entering
Wireless > wireless interfaces > (interface) > advanced or monitor status
It happens either on 3.20 or 4.11

Below is how to find the crash log on your pc. Apparently iTunes auto sends these to me but my form claims that "Too few have been sent" so I cant see any. Sounds crazy to me but I guess we have to do this manually. If I still have the symbols from this build I can find the bug you guys are seeing (hoepfully). If I don't then ill have to find it manually which is fine.
Anyways send your crash log to me at
valleyman86+Mikromanage@gmail.com. Actually if you guys have any support issues feel free to email me there.
Mac OS X : ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/<DEVICE_NAME>
Windows Vista: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
The log file names start with application name and have the extension “crash”. They are just plain text files and can be sent by e-mail in original or zipped form, or even copy-pasted into your e-mail program.

Hey, Just purchased the app!!
Firstly many thanks for all the work you are doing, excellent product, I've been waiting for a product like this for ages and yours is top notch, very much looking forward to future releases and added fuctionallity.
Can I make a suggestion / feature request please?
I manage a national wisp with approx 2500 mikrotik devices of all forms from 532a's through the 400 range and up to the 1100's, I also am running a number of dell poweredge servers running routerOS also on the EDGE operating BGP etc.
With all these devices, manual inputting of each one is simply not a viable option, could you create some form of import where I could create a csv or something and drag it onto the iPhone/iPad?
Something along the lines of the import facility in the WiFiAlign app (which I highly recommend by the way!)
Hope this will be possible and implemented soon as I am unable to use the app fully until I can get all my devices into it!!!
Many thanks again for your top notch work!!!!!!!

@ikedw Sounds like you dont have the API enabled on the device. I would check into that.
@rickashe That is a good idea. I'll keep it in mind and try to think of a handy way to import multiple devices like that.

I started reading from the forum message that said its released on down, but didnt see much.
Maybe a how to install doc?

Found it.
What is Radio A and Radio B?
Also you cannot edit the connection setup.... is there a trick to that?
Re: Mikrotik Management for iPhone Available Now

Radio A/B is just a way to manage two radios at the same time. I plan on adding ability to add them dynamically. You can not currently edit a device. That is also being worked on.

Re: Mikrotik Management for iPhone Available Now

Yes actually where I worked with Mikrotik we had lots of Radios. Maybe I should change the name of those tabs to "Device". That may make more since since a Mikrotik does not necessarily have Wifi with it.

I was wondering if people could tell me how they caused it to crash so that I could fix it. In my tests I was unable to make it happen. Also I like the idea of telling me features you want first. This will help prioritize stuff so they come first.
