Wi-Fi on an A.M. tower

Thu Aug 18, 2005 5:49 pm

Forum: Does anyone have any experience placing wi-fi equipment on a powered A.M. Tower?

Any best practices that anyone can provide? Specifically, I'm wondering if there are any specific cabling issues, as we plan to use LMR 1200 for about 400ft from our radios which will be placed at the bottom and 2.4/5.x sectors and cooresponding amps near the top?

Thanx in advance.

Is the AM station agreeable to this? Typically with cell sites we had to "shroud" our antennas so as not to affect the AM transmission. This is not easy. Keep in mind that the the whole tower is used as an antenn for AM transmission. If they are using a 50,000 watt transmitter, you might be better off finding another site.

I looked into this early when we were going to setup our wireless hot spot service and the research that I did told me it's best not to do anything on AM towers. Between the special equipment you have to use, interferance issues.. and the fact the tower has to be shut down in order to make changes to your system most radio stations won't like that idea at all. I don't think anyone's going to climb a live powered tower :P
