WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW, I need to get a new server but I will be testing it on anything I can get my hands on very soon.
They leaked some of the features 6 months ago and some of us freaked out waiting(i am sure i did) but they have the beta (THAT IS AWESOME) and has some major features people have really wanted.

The new graphs look great, discovery is very good.

I love how the graphs don't have that drop to zero where they begin... Yep that is my home network :)

These are the probes that were auto discovered on a windows vista PC. Check out the zoom function, if you slide it left you see 800 some odd days and can zoom all the way down to 10 minutes. Beautiful.

excellent, I will try it out shortly. I would really love it if I could include a png image in the map and have it behind things, not in front of them blocking it out.

Are we able to do an upgrade of Dude3.6 to 4 without losing all the history or is it a fresh install only?

I just upgraded over top of 3.5 with minor issues. I had to add in the default SNMP setting but that was it.

I had major issues with graphs. I had a line graph with about 15 different lines which was horrible, now it's mint. All of the historic data (1 year +) has come across too.

Will provide some screenshots if required.

Had moved to 4.0Beta from 3.5.
1) All the settings are saved, anything is working.
2) Graphs - work much better, correct negative values handle, it is fine.
3) Issue: backup via WEB interface. Web backup is working, but the incorrect link to XML file is provided on web page. Had to rewrite link in browser to use .tgz file. Had to modify backup script.
4) Backup 10 time redused size, from 120MB to 12 MB :).
5) Function rate() changed behaviour. Will have to rewrite a few functions.
6) 2 More default functions founded diff32() and diff64(), good news. rate plus diff is more clear, than old rate() :)
7) Tested The Dude 4 under windows and FreeBSD8+KDE4+wine everything is working.

Is anyone else seeing incorrect bandwidth readings on non-mikrotik device graphs?
The link labels show the correct speed but graphs are showing 5-6x higher than they should, I'm seeing this on Ubiquiti, Senao and Linksys clients.
nomtspeed.jpg
Also seeing odd spikes on bandwidth graphs for a Dlink DES-1228 switch
dlinkspikes.jpg
I'm not sure if this is by design but lack of detail on graph data older than 2hrs

Other than that, top job! loving the improvements :D

Like a couple of people mentioned above, it would be nice to have the Outages link back in the Contents pane, as well as a quick "remove resolved" button like in the previous versions.

Another thing that would be absolutely awesome is the ability to chart packet rates (Interface.InUnicastPacketsRate and Interface.OutUnicastPacketsRate) in device links, right along with Rx/Tx, so you don't have to create a separate chart just to track PPS.

Other than that, this is looking VERY good. I'll be adding about 2000 nodes to our setup to see how it handles large amounts of nodes.

Great work, guys!!!

Just upgraded the work installation a few minutes ago from 3.6. Couldn't wait to get a new server :)

All the probes and history came across with no trouble. Other than configuring the server as a service everything else looks great.

There is db file in the dude data folder instead of a dat file. You can find a windows command line tool for sqlite3. Looks like we got some SQL to learn.

Charts have their fill values reset to default 20%.

I was using 20 second polling and it was bothering one of my APC UPS so I modified the probes on those type of UPS to poll less often.

Still has the loading bug. Ping response times still do not match the real world.
loading.png
Ping was way off on this box, manually clicking reprobe got it back to somewhat normal.
ping.png
[edit - as of 12:45 the ping probe that I manually reprobed is staying below 15ms with most of them at 0.]

Thanks for all the much needed updates!

As for SQLite3 though, I cannot read the data unless Dude is completely shut down. Even using SQLITE3_OPEN_READONLY, I get denied because the database is locked. SQLite is supposed to be able to handle concurrency with the exception of simultaneous writes, which I am eliminating by opening it in read only mode. Any suggestions for how we can query the data externally while Dude is running?

I realize your intention for using a db was probably more to permit the Dude to scale to large amounts of data, but many of us were requesting it so we could massage the data in our own custom ways outside the Dude as well.

"configurable amount of history data per data source used in charts, up to
unlimited amount and detail of history"

So are all probes now controlled by the values stored on the charts tab?

Raw values are summarized into 10 min averages and so on?

You can find a windows command line tool for sqlite3. Looks like we got some SQL to learn.
You do not, just use firefox add-on SQLite manager https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5817/
But, there is no interesting informanion in it.

wanned
many of us were requesting it so we could massage the data in our own custom ways outside the Dude as well.
Unlucky, stored information has no value without dude. At least it seems to be so, because all the objects (maps, devices, probes, functions....) are stored in blob data format. And you can explore the database stored in backup, but not online dude database.

lebowski
Raw values are summarized into 10 min averages and so on?
The data is stored in format called Round Robin Database. The most used example of it is rrdtool, check this
http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/index.en.html
This tool is under GPL and can be used in open source projects only.....

Stop The Dude, copy C:\Program Files\Dude\data\dude.db and use plugin to access it.
or, better make a backup of dude config, extract from zip dude.db and use plugin to access it. You can not access it on working server.

I dont know if this has been fixed, but a read-only user can winbox to anything in the network without entering their own credentials. Can you make read-only users get the winbox login but don't pass in the stored password? Read-only users can have full access to all routers at the moment.

Gsandul how did the rate command change? My one rate probe is broken...
The rate() function changed it's behavior from COUNTER (is for continuous incrementing counters like the ifInOctets counter in a router) to ABSOLUTE (is for counters which get reset upon reading)
You can read here the complete definition of COUNTER and ABSOLUTE
http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdcreate.en.html
But there are 2 more new functions diff32() and diff64(). The COUNTER behavior may be composed from this functions combined with rate().
So new rate(diff32(My_Function())) or rate(diff64(My_Function())) is equal to old rate(My_Function()) function.

The advantage of this approache is correct processing of counter resets in 32 and 64 bit counters.

Ping charts should have info on packet loss and be more reliable.. yep, remove resolved button for outages back, pls. One thing that is not so important, but I miss since it was removed, is the possibility of turning on or off the outlines on map objects. Great improvements so far, thanks!

I don't know what you can do about your maps with out recreating your 3.6 server and trying to upgrade again or start a new 4beta and try to import your 3.6 maps.

You can't connect to local host. Connect to the IP or by name.

The graphing is superb, no little jaggies or missed timing.

1. it says "localhost" is usable for local box and is prepopulated in the address box on startup. so I have to use an ip of the local machine when localhost has to be defined?
2. losing my 3.6 maps. I can try reinstalling 3.6 on this box then what?
3. graphing...the bug I reported and was confirmed dealt with switching interfaces and the the graph would show a huge upward spike. It was never fixed in 3.x; is it in 4?

thanks leon

I suppose he meant that if you want to make a host entry in your hosts file... just a guess. The connecting screen is much more clear but is an unusual appearance for sure.

Do you have a copy of the dude folder or anything like a backup? Do you export the XML once in a while? Almost any windows computer can run the Dude and you can do test imports...

As for the bug I they reported it was fixed in 3.6. I don't know if it was for sure but in older versions if you clicked on reprobe a bunch of times the graph would be incorrect as well. That is fixed.

I hope you are able to recover without too much trouble. They need to take a close look at importing maps since two people have reported losing their maps.

Is there any chance that you integrate in official release, sms notification. There were lot of talk concerning that issue in this forum.
For example my current situation is The dude running on RB monitoring whole network, and beside that on same RB routeros netwatch monitors and sends sms on usb gateway because The Dude cant use sms send command from routeros.
I just wonder if you can improve this.

Please bring back the outages link on the menu and the ability to remove resolved outages, there's absolutely no reason to remove it.
It would be very useful if The Dude had an in-built updater so no need to uninstall etc etc, saves alot of time and configuring.

Hi,

First of all: I'm glad that there is the new Dude 4.0 Beta 1. But I'm also disappointed!

:( 1. There wasn't any email notification about it!
:( 2. In this version the so called "image load bug" still exsits. Some Icons don't show up, even some that comes with the dude itself. I still have to put a second image on the map to let it load correctly.

Is it that hard to solve this problem? So please, please, please take a closer look on this issue.
btw restartig the server several times does not always resolve this issue and isn't pratical.

Kind Regards, INDAVO :D :D :D

Hi,

@lebowski
ok, i meant that, sorry. I disconnect and reconnect and !sometimes! this has an effect but not reliable! 95% of all reconnects the icons fail.

@normis
I checked my emails now 4 times. I did not receive anything. I also tried to subscribe for the infomail again but the system said that my email is already in the list. So it's probably a problem with my email provider.
But thats not the point. I just wanted to inform you of this everlasting error of the Dude. I need the custom Icon Feature cause I created about 20 Device Classes with different Icons. And seeing just 5% of them is rubbish. And also adding every Device twice is rubbish.
Please have a look on this.

Haven't had time to check to see what happens when I go back to 3.6
I did find a hardcopy of some stuff but it's time that is the problem.

also, regarding the graphin issues in 3.6, the problem I specifically reported was if you changed an interface being monitored it would spike sky high and then simmer down. DO we know if this was fixed in 4.x?

I just checked and the graphing bug is still there. This is really irritating. This was reported numerous times last year. TO see this bug in action use SNMP and rollover the link and get the history and then switch to a different interface and you will see a huge spike. THen go back to the interface where u weer and you will see another huge spike.

I installed an almost fresh Dude 4 beta (I told the installer to remove older data) and after setting up 3 maps, 10 charts and a 9-chart panel, now I cannot use it :(

I open Dude, tries to connect to 127.0.0.1, it starts loading the interface and get stuck in there at 100% cpu usage. After a while the client says connection closed with server and starts over again.
(pic attached of the "half loaded Dude")

Sometimes it finishes loading but when I try to use it it just ignore any interaction or takes really long to respond.

But despite of this, i'm loving it :)

I wonder what happens to those other chart configuration if I put raw data to be stored over 10 years and the remaining parameters at minimum storage time values. Will them become unusable? I'm still playing with chart data, but what a lovely statement. We can see detailed data over years!

Unfortunately, seems we catch kinda a bug. When using a chart on a panel, seems it does not refresh the display. I mean, put a chart on panel and set its zoom value to 24h, then future data reading does not refresh that chart automatically until we force it.

Outages and Remove Resolved button back where it was, PLEASE. OR at least, a server configuration to disable outages processing. Some people may have good use of those resolved outages, but here it is just a waste of storage and it become worse inconveniently when opening outage list as it spend a big time filling the list.

Thanks
Ozelo

I had an environment monitor offline for 30 minutes today. Actually someone hard reset it, it has a stattically assigned IP so when it came back up with out a configuration it still got the correct IP address.

I went to see the gap in the graph, it should be from around 12:42pm to 1:15pm... But it just filled in the 30 minutes as if it could talk to it the whole time.
outage.png
graph.png
The failure on the read was "timeout".
I believe you can reproduce the issue, remove snmp from a device and put it back some time later.

Is there going to be a big bug cleanup sweep? I have a list of them I have been keeping track of.

1) When i try export backup in .tgz format from Dude GUI - Dude write in left-down "Exporting..." and "Downloading export file...". After - disconnect without save-dialog. Strange. First export are normal. At now - not. I was trying many times - result is same. Why?! Dude installed on RouterOS 3.17

2) Web interface - same result. Btw, can i get TGZ backup over HTTP? Web interface requests only xml backup.

UPD: Once wrote a post - tried to make a backup from the GUI and everything worked.

I really like some of the new features in ver 4.

But, I am like a few other posters who want to see the overall Outages back so it can be added to a panel (not the settings per map).

I also have not figured out a way to set a default time period for the history graph. It currently defaults to "All" but we would find it more use full to have it default to let's say the past 1hr, but still have the ability to go back in time still. Very similar to the 3.6 way. The same for the ability to use the mouse scroll wheel in the graph to change the time period.

Windows 7 will not ping if "The Dude" is ran under a user with out admin. You might check to see if disable UAC would let ping work. I don't have W7 to test but there is other threads that talk about ping and W7.

have upgraded from 3.6 to 4.0beta2 on RouterOS, all maps are ok - export and import works good
but all my charts don`t work
any graphs shows nothing!!!
see attachments

after upgrading RouterOS from 5.beta1 to beta 5.0beta4 I cant add ssh keys
[admin@VPN_Serdi_Server] /user ssh-keys> import file=id_dsa.pub user=mikrotik
action timed out - try again, if error continues contact MikroTik support and send a supout file (13)

- 4.0beta2 can't create "dude store" on ROS 5beta5, same on RB433AH and RB600A.
4.0beta1 can. After upgrade from 4.0beta1 to 4.0beta2, dude store is not active, but backup, can't login by dude client.

-4.0beta2 starts at ROS 4.10, but there's problem with charts. On web it cant generate any chart, but CPU loads 100%, and all memory is filled step by step, and then cleared. same on 433, 433AH, 600A.

-Have anyone seen any chart with 4.0beta2 on RB?? On RB, because, when dude is a service on WIN XP it works ok. Just submit, or dement this issue, but i think, there is a problem, bcoz i tried many dude beta versions, ROS versions, and RBs.

how many devices you have for monitoring? How fast does the memory usage grow. Are you using some special configuration in the dude?

400 + devices. I'm not using any specil configurations. After service restart all is working correctly and the memory does not grow, but when I'm starting to use the program, memory grows about 64Kilobytes in 2 seconds... On previous stable version all was ok.

Hi guys, there seems to be a bug when I'm monitoring the signal strength through SNMP. It can work fine for days graphing the signal strength but then randomly stops and the only way to start it again is to recreate the data source and chart etc, ping and traffic monitoring always works properly. It's monitoring a Ubiquiti Nanostation 2. This bug seems to happens on all the versions of The Dude that I've tried (3.5,3.6, 4.0 beta 1 and beta 2).

Currently manually added about 100 devices to the 4.0b2, no memory leaks... It seems to be, that there was a problem with import from 3.6.

Testing...

I just tried upgrading from 3.6 to 4.0beta2 on my RB1000.
I gave it 45 minutes and the dude never came back up. I am running 4.8 on my rb1000.
I am going to try and put 3.6 back on.

Any thoughts as to why?
