Noob question : RB411 as Client.

Wed Jul 07, 2010 8:42 pm

Hi all :D ,

I´m new on this forum and networking stuff in general . Sorry for my english because is very bad :o .

I have a very basic question from u i suppose:

I need to configure a RB411 as a client , attached to an AP Router of an ISP( wich ip is 192.168.1.1).

I managed to connect the wlan1 as client of the AP router ----> wlan1 ip`s range is 192.168.1.XX obtained from the AP (client DHCP on wlan1 is ok)

Well, here comes my question.....
How i manage for that the pc i connect to eth1 of the RB 411 get internet connection, taking it from 192.168.1.1 ??

I dont know if eth1 must be in 192.168.1.xx range or must be in another range of ip and then configure NAT -MASQUERADE or sometthing similar .... :?

If i put eth1 in the same range of wlan1, can´t manage to connect with 192.168.1.1

I think i have the brain very confused :D and i´m loosing something very obvious .... so excuse me plzzz.

Any advice will be much apreciate .....

Greetings and thanks to all :)

Ask your ISPs admin to configure it. It will take 10minutes max.

You have a couple of options.
1.) Bridge ether1 with wlan one and have the client get a DHCP lease from the ISP.
2.) Set up the RB411 to route with the WLAN being the WAN port.

For number 1, it depends on the ISP and how they handle things if you want to do this or not.

For number two you need to have the IP assigned to the wireless card as well as a default route for it to send traffic to. Then you need to set up a different subnet and IP on ether1 and then set up a NAT rule to masquerade that subnet out to the WAN.

First of all thanks for reply.

Finally get the 411 configured as client :D

Feklar, i did option 2 and works very well for me:

I put eth1 on a different ip range, and then adding srcnat - out interface wlan - masquerade to see the gateway ... impressive !!!! :D :D :D

im going to try option 1 lets see !

Greetings :)
