30dbi dish antenna

Tue Jul 20, 2010 5:57 pm

am trying a link 70km with a 30dbi antenna.am able to see the other dish signal in -74 but want connect.am using 5 gzh and frequency 5260.
do these antenna have a specific frequency to run on.

More info would be helpful,
make/model of dish,
what radio cards used,

then we can calculate what signal to expect, but so far my guess is assuming you have peaked alignment, is your radio cards are running at 15dBm ?
As regards "do these antenna have a specific frequency to run on" it really depends on what frequency is not congested, interference at both locations

At -74dBm, whats the noise floor like, and is that signal the same on both sides of the link? Assuming a signal-to-noise of around 25dB, a connection is definitely possible. Is it not perhaps something simple like access table in the wireless config or the AP? Or a security issue with a WEP key etc?

Have you run snooper on both dishes in their current positions/aligments to see what the optimal frequency of operation for your link will be?

The spec sheet on the antenna should have a curve across it's stated band of operation, showing at what freq you can expect max gain.

am using a 411rb with an xr5 card on both sides.the spec for the grid 5.4-6 Ghz 30dbi dish antenna 90*70cm parabolic reflector

thanks for the response

Using the Xr5, allowing for cable loses of say 2db then at 5260, then you should have -65dbm with System Operating Margin of 9dbm, a tight margin but as you are getting -74, then either:
(1) Antenna misalignment,
(2) Higher than 2db cable loss,
(3) Antenna gain less than 30 at that frequency,
(4) All of the above,

You have several options:
(1) Move frequency and select one with best signal,
(2) Reduce cable loses,
(3) Reduce data rates on the XR5 which at 54= 23dbm to 36 = 26dbm, or 24 = 28dbm

Could be that your frequency is a bit off. I would FIRST change you frequency to one that is in range of the antenna.
