Possible use of a Mikrotik

Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:12 pm

Hi i have a problem with Windows that may be solved by using a Mikrotik.

I have set up a computer at work to accept multiple OpenVPN incoming connections, each with a separate virtual adapter. The machine is sat on the same network as the rest of the machines in the office and i need everyone else in the office to be able to use those OpenVPN connections using the 1st computer as a "gateway" sort of thing to the OpenVPN networks. If i enable Internet Connection Sharing on one of the virtual adapters then add the appropriate routes to our other machines then everyone can see everything fine but obviously with Windows you can only enable ICS on one adapter!? No good for me. Would, in this situation, putting a MT in between the office and this standalone machine do the job and do some sort of routing on the MT. Btw i have put a MT as our main office router so if i can do anything on there that would be great, at the moment its just opening ports and forwarding the OpenVPN connections to this machine!

Thanks in advance for any advice/help!

Easy fix

Plug your VPN machine into an interface on your MT router then create firewall rules that restrict any connection from that interface to addresses/subnets allowed for VPN users.

Cool, ok i thought i might have to do this...i suppose this way i could set up routes to route traffic for the remote vpn subnets through eth3 (for example) that right?

Would Windows stand in the way again? Like i said about only be able to share one connection at a time? Ideally i'd like the routing to be left to the MT, not Windows because everyone goes through the MT...
