Download Entire Web

Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:16 am

Is it possible to download the entire web and store it on servers then clients can browse locally then using up internet bandwith a big pipe of internet can be pumped to keep the local servers uptodate with the internet....

For instanance i live in malawi and our internet is so expensive people can t even affor 128kilo bits per second it costs $400 for 128k well if it is possible to store internet i could buy a 1mega link to keep the servers up-to-date and clients could have 1mega browsing speeds.

Please note not cache server something like a buffer server

If interent is expensive, how are you going to download the entire internet? Wouldn't that be too expensive to do?

Apart from that, no it's impossible. Webproxy with cache is your best bet.

Google has estimated the size of the entire web to be about 5 million terabytes. No matter what broadband you have, you can't download it. And where are you going to store it? :)

right that i understand now so how do these isp's in europe work how do they get such reall fast internet we are connected to the optic link as well seacom and buying 100mb from them but still our internet is sold in bits instead of bytes they say 1mb dedicated is 15thousand usd what would be the best way to get fast internet in to malawi v-sat is not a option as it is very expensive.....

I think the ISP that you use gets their internet via satellite, that's why it's not so fast. Whole internet infrastructure in Europe is different. They don't have fast internet because of buffer or cache, they simply have fiber from-to everywhere. No satellite.

well we have one isp in malawi the only isp running optic fibre now they are connected to a ring of optic running awnd africa and i think they buy 100mb bandwith for the entire country and they are very un-reliable as their cable is cut most of the time so on and so forth running optic in the city doesn t really make a difference does it as wifi can transmit that data to clients so the best way to get intrnet right now in africa would only be by hooking up to the optic ring direct or pulling a direct optic line from europe which would then give a high speed back bone and the link should reach malawi direct then going round africa e.g. malawi could be fast do you think? due to we are connecting to a ring internet is very slow as it goes round before reaching the international gateway.

Of course that would be best, but it's quite an unrealistic plan. Making such a cable would cost hundreds of millions of USD. Maintaining this would cost even more.

your best bet would be to connect to that african optic ring you mentioned. at least somebody has already invested into the infrastructure. of course, as long as the cable cutting will not be solved, it will be problematic.

but you know - it's africa. nothing is easy, nothing is simple.

I don't know whats up in Malawi but cable operators in some parts of Africa did not cut down costs even after landing of the fibre optic cable -last year citing that they had long term contracts with satellite providers. (and ofcoz a dramatic reduction in prices = dramatic reduction in ARPU)

But this year small wisps have sprung up left right and center , connected directly to Seacom, Eassay , Teams etc All these lovely submarine cables have connected Africa to the IXPs worldwide ... And prices are falling ...! Wohooo !

Hope this will happen in Malawi soon, soo Zain doesn't have to download the whole Internet !

Soo... Yap TIA*
