Slow ping values through pppoe

Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:18 pm

Hello, I have the following setup: MT 2.9.1 on a PC with 5 ethernet cards, 4 of them bridged and configured to handle pppoe clients, the fifth one is the public interface. Windows XP pppoe clients are connecting well, but:

If I ping MT from XP I get constantly 9 ms ping values.
More interesting: if I ping the XP client from MT, I get 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 ms values in cycle!
I tried
- to change the hardware (motherborad and ethernet cards),
- go back to MT 2.8.28
- only one eth. card and no bridging
- to play with pppoe services' max MTU and MRU,
but no difference.

I can't figure out what is wrong, please help.
Thanks.

One thing could be that ms windows has not nearly as accurate timer as your average linux/unix. This will make pinging from windows less accurate than routeros.

Thank you Sten,
yes, a M$ suck again. I installed Linux onto the same machine, set up the pppoe client and now pings are <1ms.
You won a beer from me in Prague nex year january :-)
