Traffic stops on PPPoE connections

We are using pppoe to connect WInXp customers to our MK.

We have sometimes problems on the network due to the fact that 99% of our customers are connected directly with WinXP (SP1 and SP2) through pppoe to our network.

Problems are:

1) disconnections, sometimes they are disconnected after a 2 or 10 minutes (we don’t know if of inactivity or not)
2) sometimes they are not disconnected, so that they look connected (on their PC the pppoe interface says connected), but they cannot surf. It happens after some minutes of the connection. Customers disconnect and reconnect, this solve the problem (for some moments and then again..)
3) VIRUS, broadcast, bogons, etc...: since they are connected directly they can invade the network with packets

anyone with same configuration on teh network (WinXP+pppoe+..) ?
similar probs ?

thanks
Gianluca

Try to enable ICMP in Windowd XP Firewall. I think MT pppoe server is checking pppoe clients via icmp. If server cannot reach client via icmp, then client is timed out and server is closing pppoe connection. But for some reason windows pppoe client stay up.

we already tried to disable the complete firewall of windows but it keeps doing the same thing.

We had this problem with 2.8 if a client used the original windows xp pppoe-client. With raspppoe everything was fine.
The problem came back with the upgrade to 2.9 (already with raspppoe!)
We disabled MPPE. Now it works. we didn´t test since the last update to 2.9.5. Maybe it´s fixed now.

Hope it helps!

we are giving a router with pppoe to the customers. Then we use nat and cust has an internal private network. You can find router for 15 euros.

nice solution :) unfortunately we need MPPE encryption on our PPPoE connections as we establish them on wireless network, and we still haven't find cheap router that supports it.
thanks anyway,
