Req: Add LZO or gzip type compression to tunnels (EoIP, etc)

Thu Oct 27, 2005 10:01 am

Would it be possible to add LZO or gzip compression to EoIP or other tunnels, possibly even add it to Nstreme, so that Nstreme can run software level compression? Fast processors should be able to strongly compress some data, especially text/html, non-compressed data. I believe a competing software router product out on the market is doing this and is achieving some faster speeds by turning compression on. In tests, we've seen 2.5 to 3Mbps over T1 lines (1.5Mbps data rate), for compressed data speeds and upwards of 50Mbps on 20-30Mbit wireless links.

With MT, we're seeing 40-60Mbps on some links and I'm drooling for the day that MT adds another level of compression, as an option that can be turned on/off at will. We have more than enough CPU to handle the compression (1-2Ghz processors w/256-512MB RAM on higher end sector arrays).

Thanks,
Judd

I like the idea, I wonder if it can be done?
