711 Reliability?

We are currently using 711s for all of our CPEs but have recently found that the boards are dying in the field with only about a month of service.
Has anyone else had reliability issues with these? I will be gathering all for RMA.

We've got a few out there now, no failures yet. Whats dying? Ethernet? Does it give link?

what type of antenna are you using? are they DC Ground?

rb-711's working great here. i have some that are up several months no problems with them,

except when power goes out then they reboot :)

We have a total of about 50 711's that have failed. We are sending back for RMA. Most of these are in a Poynting midrange enclosure. a majority of the issue with this consist of the POE injector light just cutting off as soon as you plug it in. On a couple of occasions I mount the radio and am only in it for 30 seconds then its dead with the POE blinking.

Something is bad wrong here.

Have you tried without a 'smart sensing POE injector' ?

We have a few out there as well, all on either 24V Plug packs or 24V Switching Power supplies and none have died. But they are all using 'dumb' poe injectors as such, ie no smarts just power wired to the correct pins.

I'd be suspicious of the POE injector if that's what you are using on all of your 711 installs.

Please send the serial numbers of those boards to support@mikrotik.com so that we can check if there are others with the same problem as we are not currently aware of any bad batches. RB711's are being used in a very large volume.

We've no problems with 711 so far. We've a lot of failing 411 as the
Ethernet port is very sensitive to current events. Not seen this on
711.

I'm seeing a near 100% failure rate on both the 711 and the SXT. The last time I saw this was with early Tranzeo TR-CPE's in 2003-4. Jim replaced al the radios and disclosed that the issues was with the Ethernet chip.

Symptom: Some have no Ethernet connection and you can communicate with others if you force the Ethernet speed to 10Mbps and use a short cable. Negotiate to 100Mbps and you have excessive packet loss.

We had an electrical storm three weeks ago and lost half of the 711's and SXT's. We replaced them with the same. Another storm Saturday night and lost all but 1 RB711 and 1 RB711A. These are in the field as replacements to Canopy radios that were in service since 2006. The Canopy radios were put back in on Sunday, took us until 9pm to swap everything out.

We have Canopy, Ubiquiti and Tranzeo in the field alongside the 711's and SXT's. Zero failures with the other products.

I see no point in RMA as I'd get the same product back and just go through the cycle of dead radios and unhappy customers. I'll ask for replacements when the hardware issue is resolved. We use DBS on all these radios so I'll spend the morning creating a method to manage all these locations using a single router.

Let's review, zero failures out of hundreds of Canopy, Ubiquiti and Tranzeo radios and all but one 711 and one 711A have failed, on the same night, due to an electrical storm. Every 711 or SXT is coupled to a Ubiquiti AP on the same mast or to a Canopy AP on the same mast or a Tranzeo backhaul on the same mast. Nothing else failed, just the 711's and the SXT's. So, it may be that the problem with the Ethernet port on 711'a and SXT's is exacerbated by any number of things including a problem with ground, but there is still a problem with the RB711 and SXT.

With Routerboards representing less than 2% of our outdoor radio gear, no other equipment failed. Just the RB711's and SXT's. One 711 that failed was 10 feet up on an 18 foot mast grounded to a well casing that is 360 feet deep. The shielded Cat5 is grounded at the power supply, also grounded to the well casing. The ITElite enclosure is grounded to the mast. Cat 5 length is less than 8 feet. The Ubiquiti Bullet M2 AP at the top of the mast is cruising along with no issues and I've had Canopy gear running at the same location since 2006. This particular RB711 is one that I can establish a 10Mbps connection with. 100Mbps will negotiate but packet loss is too great to allow communication.

As others are experiencing the same problem, the manufacturer should acknowledge the problem and streamline replacement when the new hardware version is available.

Just like every one of my RB450's have failed, all due to sub-spec capacitors. This happened well outside of a fair warranty period so they are in the landfill. The 711's are no more than 90 days in the field. The SXT's, perhaps a month.

I suspect others will jump all over me by saying this but I don't ground any routerboard on a mast, my opinion is with low voltage dc ( and not lethal high voltages) to have the earth floating and as such ESD cannot discharge to earth as it doesn't have a direct path to do so and remember if you provide a easy route for static to discharge through you’re your boards it will, I don't have board failures, I would if static ESD was a big issue install a discharge unit (ionizer) like those used at the top of commercial towers.

Also I know earthing everywhere causes hum loops in professional audio hence they have earth lift switches installed, in RF circuits earthing is done by star earthing so I would ask what is the best earthing technique for us WISP using the frequencies we operate at.
