Unstable rb's with r52hn

Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:58 pm

I found that when added more than one r52hn mini-pci card to a routerboard the routerboard becomes unstable. This applies to rb433, rb600 and rb800 boards. I did not try other rb's. Can some-one give me a solution for this please. i get such good results with the r52hn card that I would like to use this to its full benefit.

HI Johan

can you please define "the routerboard becomes unstable."

I am running a 433AH with 2 x r52Hn's and 1 x R52 , and an RBPC with 2x RH2HN (Both Dual Pole) and one generic card for a 2.4AP Both Seem rather stable,
I have had some issues with 3xr52Hn's in an 433 and after a lot of research i found that the wattage required by the card cannot be deliver by the board.

The RB435GAUH seems to be able to give enough power for 3x R52Hn's (with active cooling),

The issues could be from the following and depending on your config

1) Not enough Power from POe causing thermal runaway on the board (or the board cant deliver the required wattage for the cards)
2) Not enough CPU power for the thruput of the device to keep up with all the packet markings and QOS, Generally when it starts to get out of hand the BGP suffers, then the device starts locking up, and eventually want to be rebooted, if you want to see the effect of this, take a 113 and expose it to a good size bgp table, give it enough data, and flap the bgp a few times.

If you could be more specific then i can try and assist you.

Yes - I found the same and change my rb's to the more upgraded ones like 433ah instead. I also avoid using poe and rather connect power directly.

I further found that you must use a 1 a transformer and not the smaller 0,3 a transformers.

Thank you for your assistance.

There is a way to power the cards directly with 5v, I personally wouldnt recommend it, but ive seen a few people swear by it, there is a diode that needs to be removed so that you open the the power circuit to the main board ( so that no power can run back into the board ( they say this is optional ) but i would'nt.

Anyway, Good luck, and let me know if you have any other issues.

Thank you - I would like to know which diode this is.

Maybe you can assist me with repairing my new rb1100 2xah. I tried to downgrade it to vers 4.17. It did not work. I could enter it with hyperterminal but not with netinstall.

You can start a new thread and message me the details.

When you HT into it, can you bring any of the Ethers up if not then perhaps some of the ports are damaged, and sometimes net install work better from other ports that eth-0

Even if you ena all the ports and then connect them all to an switch one of them might catch the net install.

You can force a net install from the terminal.

/sys routerboard settings set boot-device=try-ethernet-once-then-nand
