If not SR2, then what?

Wed Nov 09, 2005 4:26 pm

I am new to using MT as an AP. I was intending on using SR2's, but they seem go be giving alot of guys problems.

What radio do you use for a 2.4 AP?

Thanks,

Jeff

I am using the two SRC cards in RB230s. The testing I have been doing is looking really good, so I am going to replace the Senao 200mW cards with the SRC cards. Not that I don't like the old cards but they don't support VAP, and that is something we really need at this time. Oh, and the added speed (54mbit G mode) and power are a big plus.

@jober

If I understand correctly, you have used PCMCIA version, cardbus or what they call it? Why haven't you used SR2? The PCMCIA version supports a/b/g if I remember correctly (Ubiquiti Web site doesn't work at the moment). These two cards are not completely the same, SR2 supports just b/g and it probably have different firmware than SRC. I have one SR2 card, but I can't test it yet because I don't have other stuff (cable,). I am looking forward to get real life information about SR2 because I plan to buy lot of them to use for AP's. I'am also thinking about Senao 200mW cards.

I like the SRC because it’s a good match for the system I have. I’m using the RB230 with one of the SRC cards in B/G mode and the other in A mode. The B/G runs at 300mW which connects to the 13dbi 2.4 GHz port on the duel band antenna and then the second card runs 100mW in A mode which connects to the 16dbi 5.8ghz port on the same duel band antenna. (All for Point to Multi Point)
I know there are a lot of other antennas I could go with but the tower space is costly, so the two in one antenna is nice. Also I’m 280 feet up and the customers I need to hit are from .10th of a mile to 5 miles and these antennas have a good vertical beam width.

After the system runs stable for about three months I will try to add one of the SR5 cards for Point to Point connections. I will tst one box first and if it runs stable for three months then I will add it to the other box's. But I think I will have power problems.

I only have two 6 foot mounting poles at 280 feet and two more at 240 feet.

I really have to watch how the system is setup to not interfere with my self.

I have not taken the time to read it but I was told that with the new update to part15, I can run the ptmp system up to 44 db instead of the current 36 max.

For the customer side up to one mile I am using the Deliberant DBL-2300s with integrated 14dbi panel and they work very well, so far. Any thing from two to four miles I use 19dbi grid or panels. And over five miles I use the 24dbi grid.

In time I will replace all the CPE's with Wrap, RB230 or RB500 with MT OS and use the SR2 and SR5. The plane is to make every customer a repeater site for hotspot. I could do it now with WDS but I feel a system like that would never give me the speed that I want to give my customers. The MT system would have a longer life time of use and it has any option I will ever need. One such option is the soon to be released 5 and 10 MHz channels. But the only thing is, I will have to master the fine art of running multi channels into one antenna. And we all know that it's not recommended. But it can be done.

As for the Senao200mW cards, I was using them and they are great cards that have little or not problems. BUT, I have moved to the SRC because it is an Atheros chipset and the Senao cards are prism. The Atheros supports VAP and I need it in a big way. OH, also the SRC is B/G not just B like the good old Senao 200mW cards. : )

SR2 and SR5 cards

Tue Nov 15, 2005 5:00 pm

I have both of these types of cards in service - they have ran flawlessly since July. It gets awful hot in OK - I am very happy with how they performed. We have them in RB500 boards, and couldn't be any happier. I wish the RB500 would support more than a couple of these cards on one board, maybe that will happen in the future. Other than that - I would recommend them to anybody. As a matter of fact there is a friendly neighboring WISP, that is converting to MT and SR series cards because of the preformance we are seeing.

I got a few of the first sr2 and sr5 cards. I put 4 of the SR5's in the PtMP system in New Orleans and they are running great, but they are also in FenRouters.
I also have 2 of the SR2 cards and 2 more of the SR5 cards some place in here.
See pic here http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,14815362
I had one of the three trees that hit the house smash the roof in over the garage, so I had to pile all my things in a big pile so that the sheet rock can be fixed.
If I can find them I am going to see if I can get 2 of the SRC cards and 1 of the SR5 cards to work in a RB230.
