l2tp-client to Linux openl2tpd based server

Wed Oct 05, 2011 9:29 pm

Has anyone tried connecting a RB-450G (v4.14) l2tp-client to a Linux openl2tp server?

openl2tp.org provides the openl2tp daemon (use as LAC/LNS) along with pppol2tpd kernel mode pop driver.

I am able to see packets arrive from the mtik board, but even a basic, unencrypted tunnel without authentication does not come up.

Any advise?

The set up is simple

[mtik l2tp-client]---------[openl2tpd server]

I am able to connect other linux machines as clients easily.

share the configuration of both.

Also check logs on both sides (enable them if not already)

@Mikrotik Team - Can you please maybe evaluate using openl2tp server for RouterOS? LAC/LNS function would really be very appreciated.

I am at present trying to upgrade my server (CentOS 5.4) that has the openl2tpd. This is because openl2td requires pppol2tp-kmod which in kernels lower than 2.6.23 will only support openl2td v0.19. At least I am not able to compile openl2tpd v1.8 successfully on older kernel.

Once I finish the upgrade to CentOS 6 (2.6.34) I will have the pppol2tp (now part of the kernel) with pppd 2.4.5 & then openl2tpd 1.8 to test with.

I am not sure what you mean by "Can you please maybe evaluate using openl2tp server for RouterOS?" Is there a separate openl2tp package available specially for connecting to RouterOS devices?

LAC is currently unsupported. We will add this feature in the future.

Does that mean that the RB-450G can only be used as a L2TP client? I presume only for VPN function BUT NOT for LAC?

And hence does that imply that none of the RB devices can be used as LNS either?

My interest is to aggregate traffic on to a RB-450G using 2 LAN ports and then provide L2 tunnel (bridge) over to a central location with a L3 network in the middle:

[WiFi User]----->[WiFi AP]----Ethernet----->[RB-450G]-----L3-Network---->[LNS]----->[Should be able to see Ether MAC of WiFi user at this end]

If not L2TP, can I use EoIP and if yes what devices and what limitations to expect?

sorry, to be more precise LAC is unsupported. Of course RouterOS can be used as L2TP server.
