Ethernet chipset with best packets per second throughput?

Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:33 pm

Hi all -

Sorry if this is a bit OT, but I'd like to know which of the rOS supported networking chipsets has the best throughput in terms of packets per second? I have SmartBit tests from a couple of the Axiomtek network appliances, which measure packet forwarding efficiency of the unit's Ethernet subsystem, among other things. It turns out that the Axiomtek NA-820, which is the basis of the PowerRouter 732 and uses the Intel 82573L chipset, is a rather poor performer when dealing with high rates of small (i.e. 64-byte) packets, which is exactly where I'm looking for performance. In practical application under those conditions, I've found that the receiving port will start dropping packets long before the CPU is anywhere near saturated - typically at about 50% CPU load in my case. In terms of actual traffic, this translates into around 150Mbps or so of 64-byte packets being all that the chipset can handle. Axiomtek has another unit that uses the Intel 84574L chipset, which performed about 400% better under the same conditions. But there are other supported chipsets - can anyone share any data on performance?
