How Often Should We Reboot Radios

Sat Apr 21, 2012 10:25 pm

I was on the UBNT forum and noticed several folks mention that they reboot the radio every week or so to clear caches and improve performance. In fact, some folks have requested a "scheduled reboot" feature be added.

Is that necessary with Mikrotik? How often do Mikrotik users go without rebooting a radio?

Thanks

The only time we reboot ours is when we do an upgrade.

Thanks cbrown. You've answered some of my other posts as well and I appreciate that.
Yes, a wireless system that needs regular reboots seems unstable, IMHO.

Agreed, and honestly I had never heard that before. But the only ubiquiti equipment we use are their antennas. We never use there OS.

My only restarts are from power loss. I have mikrotiks with uptime of half a year with no slowdown or anything.

Some people have 490 days uptime.
Of course this is also due to the fact, that RouterOS changes are applied instantly, and every configuration you add, doesn't ask for a reboot, as some other brands do.

Thanks everyone. I assumed that Mikrotik didn't have those same issues.

I've got an RB600 that has been on for 4 years. I had nearly 1 year uptime when a technician unplugged it to mount some equipment in a rack. It has been *almost* hit by lightning three times, blown the ether1 port. It has a 411 with 5GHz feeding it now (temp fix that has been running for three years), which has been up for 265 days without issue.

Unfortunately we found out the ethernet cable is damaged as well, one of the near misses burned through the cable. It looks like my old workhorse is probably going to be replaced some time this year.

Thanks all for the information. My Mikrotik routers are rock solid. I was wondering about the radios and you have definitely shown that the radios are just as stable.

Thanks again

Our average uptime on Mikrotik access points and backhauls is around 350-400 days. Average uptime of mikrtoik routers is 150-200 days. Average uptime ubnt aps is about 14-20 days. We have some extreamly old Mikrotik running on some soekris boards that have been up for over 700 days, only one customer connected but it still keeps on going.
