New Wireless link problem

Mon Jan 02, 2006 1:22 am

I am in the process of setting up a point to point wireless connection. I have 2 routerboards both 532 with an A and a B radio card in each one. The A cards are connected to backhaul antenna's and the B cards connected to Omni's. The connection I am trying to make is only about 3/4 of a mile away. How accurate do I need to be in aiming the antenna's at each other. This is my first run with this type of wireless and my first run with the Mikrotik software. I have done most of the configuration with Winbox. My thought was if I was buying the equipment anyway, why not add the B cards and Mesh antenna's and sell wireless at the same time. I put the first unit up on the roof (50' up) and have very good line of sight to the second location. When I setup the second side and basically point the dish type antenna at the main site, it show a -81dbm in the align screen. I know this probably sound basic, but what does that mean. Is that good or bad. Is closer to 0 better? Also having problems with WEP on the B side but that is for another post. Lastly, to sell off internet, I would like to setup some kind of hotspot software that makes anyone who connects, authenticate via mac and let them choose from a redirected web site the type of service they want, pay for it via credit card and automatically activate them for service. When there time is up (pay by the day, week or month) it cuts them off. Trying to find a package that will do this with little of no hands on from me.

Thanks for the help in advance

Mark,
Regarding signal level...you want it the higher the better. ie... -73 is a larger number than -81....etc.
