Trying to understand and setup a wireless backhaul

Tue May 22, 2012 10:37 pm

I have been looking through the forums trying to find out how to setup a dedicated backhaul link that will give me at least 100/100 such as the sxt 5-Hnd. I am using 2 router boards 433 with 5.8 FW. Wireless card I am using R52Hn but have tried others as well.

Here is what I have tried and results
Nstream on turboA would think i would at least get 50x50 but more like 20x20
NV2 on 5GhzN only i get 15x15 if I am lucky

At the momenth it is all sitting in my office with little omni antennas on it so signal/interferance should not be an issue? If someone could please dumb down how I can get to a 100x100 that I see other people posting that they are getting would be very helpful. What do i configure the wireless cards to?

Thanks

Your not going to get 100 Full Duplex out of Mikrotik wireless equipment in real throughput. For that powerful a backhaul you are going to pay for it. Estimated costs are $2500 for the complete link (if this isn't an outdoor long distance link find a way to wire it). If 100 full duplex is a must and you must have it hit me up off list tyler@caymanwireless.com and we can discuss it further.

I would also be interested in your search for high capacity backhaul possibilities. Why it can't be discussed here? :)

Here are a few things I might suggest and a few questions as well -

Suggestions

First - I'd recommend upgrading your firmware to 5.14 - put the notes below into action - and then upgrade to 5.16 when you've got everything where you want it.

If you're using a 433's the CPU power on them is such that you'll want to test *through* them not from one to the other. That is unless you do a UDP test which isn't as "real-world" accurate but get's close without taxing the CPU. As it is the radio has to not only process traffic but generate it as well.

If they're sitting right next to each other you'll need to turn down the TX power on the cards. The goal is to get the signals down to the high 50's low 60's.

Regarding NStreme or NV2 - start with Nstreme to simplify things - Polling on, Framer policy enabled, best fit - 3200.

There are a few other settings that are helpful in getting the most out of your boards - Since you've already got them connected - you might just scroll towards the middle of this tutorial to the section titled "Getting the most out of your SXT"...

Even at close range your channels make a difference. Test the different channels with a combo with each variation of HT-Above or HT-Below.

Questions

How far are you going?
Is there line of site?
Are you replacing an existing customer link?
If yes what type of traffic is passing over it to require 100 FDX?

Hope that helps!
