Old 2.9.46 on main router - upgrade??

Hi all,

As title, I have 2.9.46 on my main outside facing PC router.
It is working fine and (although I use up to 5.16 on CPE and some of my test / personal routers) I do not need any of the new features..
The license would allow upgrade to V 5

QUESTIONS:

a) is it *safe* to upgrade??
b) if I decide to upgrade, should I go up through the releases ie 3, 4, 5 ?? Or in one wham bang go to 5 ??
c) is it NECESSARY - will I gain anything?

d) I try to work on the principle 'don't mend what isn't broke' - therefore I have not been upgrading it..

I would appreciate your thoughts, given that if this router fails my entire network falls over until I replace it....

Cheers, Bill

If you have a RouterBoard of any kind - just install fresh 5.16 and write to support they will provide new key for free.
If it is x86 you will most probably have to buy a new key.

there is also possibility of step-by-step upgrading - but i personally finds it very annoying and painful.

Instead of upgrade I would go for fresh install with v 5.16 and manually re-add all the configuration back, this will allow you to adjust configuration to the configuration changes

Thanks..

But as I said it's a PC - x86..

I have taken devices from 2.x to 5.16 with no problems, including x86..
But I am asking if it is worth the effort..

The only was I could start fresh is to program a spare box then swap over..

you write:
"It is working fine and I do not need any of the new features.."
then you have no reason to upgrade...unless you want to see if someting happens!

Thanks - that is what I thought...

However one or two of the new P2P blocking features could be useful - but not at the expense of crashing my main router..

I would really like someone like Normis to comment please....
