Can't connect to OmniTIK U-5HnD

Fri Jun 01, 2012 6:46 pm

I've just bought two of these and can't connect to them. Have tried reseting them with the Reset button (15 seconds) but no respons. When I plugin the power and ethernet everything sounds fine. First one beep and then two beeps after a while. Then power and eth1 leds are on. Winbox can't find any of them. Have tried setting my computer to manual IP. 192.168.88.100 and connecting to 192.168.88.1. When I press the search button in Winbox no device is identified. Have just configured an SXT 5HnD with the same computer earlier today and that worked perfectly. What can I do?

Plug cable with poe power to eth1 and cable between computer and omnitik to 2-5 ports - default configuration is blocking incoming packets to omnitik. Then, you can reset configuration or delete rules in firewall to allow access via eth1.

Can't connect to OmniTIK U-5HnD

Why do they put a default firewall rule to block all traffic on ether1 of the Omnitik's ?

I would think these should ship with a blank config so you can configure them from the single PoE input port ?

It is configured by default as an AP, with Ether1 going to your ISP. It has firewall on the ISP port.

As it is active as an AP, you can connect to the SSID "MikroTik" and configure from there. Or if you wish to configure it in some other way, and don't want to do this over wireless, please do this before unit is mounted out of reach - while still accessible, connect to port 2-5 and change settings.

This has got to be one of the worst ideas ever. I'm sure this causes more problems than it solves.

A installed device is inaccessible once its be reset.

It is accessible from wireless and ether2-5. You should make sure that you install it where it is accessible when it's reset. As it was said above, this device is a wireless access point - so you should be able to connect to it via wireless (it's primary function).

Ok so I think what they mean by bad design is you will have to run two wires down the tower to config the the omnitik! Norm can you post a way to add a exception rule in the firewall rules to allow a spacific ip or mac address only. so that way I can keep security and still config the omnitik.

also if I have poe turned on I dont like pluging laptop... into 2-5 that has poe turned on. that is the main reason for this post. but I will have to if I want to config it. :?

Thanks for the help.
