Most of the time our login page works fine, but occasionally we get a 404 when the user tries to load the login page. This happens even when the router is barely loaded, like 1% of CPU. I don't know how often it happens, but it happens often enough that I see it while testing. After a few page refreshes in the browser, the login page loads normally. Two questions:

1. Why does this happen, and how do I fix it?

2. Is there any logging that will help me to track how often this happens?

That means that the page wasn't available. Either the network was unresponsive or something wrong with the router. What version are you using? Try using the newest version 5.18 and see if it still happens.

Is this wireless or wired?

Yes, I know that a 404 is page not found. The mystery is that the page is there, and is found most of the time. The 404 response must be sent from the Mikrotik, so the Mikrotik sometimes either cannot find the file in the hotspot folder, or is sending a 404 for some other error (which would be incorrect).

We're currently using v5.14.

This is a wired connection for both incoming and outgoing from the Mikrotik. We have many wireless access points set up around the location and using wired connections to the Mikrotik.

same is happening with me. when the users on an AP r less like 5-6 the hotspot page opens correct with no difficulties. but i implemented hotspot on my x86 and some 70-80 users trying to connect or say even 20 hosts connected the error starts. it happens on my fibre links as well. there is some where some limitation in mikrotik but i have upgraded to 5.18 and a level 6 license just to get off these errors.

I can't seem to find the 404 errors in the logs. I can easily cause a 404 error by trying to browse to a hotspot page that doesn't exist, but I haven't been able to find it reported in the logs. Which topic is it reported under?

Make sure you specifically have the hotspot topic in the logging. That is where they would be. I'm not sure if the 404 errors are actually logged or not though.
