rb751-devices and getting good WiFi-Performance

Mon Aug 06, 2012 2:32 pm

Hi!

I have hade all sorts of wireless performance issues with the rb751-devices. Mostly to Apple-products (broadcom client cards).
The problem seems to presist over the newer routerOS versions and I've seen more here on the forums to have same issues.

What's your general tips for setting these up to a good/perfect level?

I mainly use these devides as just AP's and some times as wireless routers, in small setups. 1-5 devices and 5-20 end users.
Whats your impression of this device, others having performance issues?

Fixed Card rates, certain chans disabled, specific firmware/version?

I have a few networks to set up in the near future, and I have to solve this or look elseware, but my first option is theese Mirkotik-devices

rb751-devices and getting good WiFi-Performance

There is an issue that we have found where a device will go into "sleep" mode and disconnect from AP. When it wakes and reconnect, RB751 will only connect the device at basic rate

I had the basic rate symptom - would not really call it an issue with a few cell phones where the Tx rate would stay at the basic rate. I just set configured supported and basic data rates to be 24 Mbps and up and the devices have no problems connecting at full N rates now.

More general wireless settings for the device are welcome...

Did some toying around with the settings.

First, always disable chain 0 TX. That has been the single largest contributor to getting decent bandwidth.
If using N only, use advanced rates.
If using B G N use default rates.

I can get 35Mbps TCP throughput over it.

Late add to this thread if some one still looks for an answer.
Setting regularity domain and country (in my case sweden) seems to have sloved all my wireless problems with the rb751's

If both Tx chains are enabled, speed is low and Tx CCQ is low. No matter what of Tx chains(0 or 1) is disabled things are better. Something is messed with both Tx chains enabled. Next is Tx power, if set manual tx power and no more than 19 dbm, all is ok. Setting regularity domain and country also works good but in that case current tx power is lowered(is this true?) to 14 dbm - i can not make difference between this and 19 dbm manual. I dont have external antenna yet, will test when it is available.
With all above settings, channel width 20/40 mhz, indoors, i get Tx/Rx CCQ 99-100%, P Throughput 109226 kbps and about 10 mb/s actual download.
