First Gen Apple TV converted into Mikrotik Router?

Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:54 pm

I have an old, first generation, apple tv. Not really that useful anymore - but it has a 1Ghz Pentium, 256MB of RAM, Mini-PCIe slot and a hard drive. Was thinking this could be an excellent 5Ghz bridge when combined with a new Mikrotik PCI card.

You can install linux on an apple tv - many hacks available. What I would really like to understand is:

1. Has anyone every done this? Does it work?

2. What is the biggest difference between a linux install and a RouterOS install - as far as partitions is concerned. I understand that the Apple TV needs to have specific boot partitions organised so it can boot - and my understanding is that RouterOS may store custom info in partitions.

What would you advice be - try it ?

Thanks kindly.

Install x86 on the hard drive with a normal computer. Then, move the partitions around to match whatever is needed for Apple TV. Then, install in the Apple TV and boot.

If it boots, you will probably have to purchase a Router License at this point, as it will be in demo mode.

As far a further troubleshooting to get it to boot, you will need to discuss in some apple tv hacking forum about the partition issues.
