How to Interpret User Profile Status "PAUSED"

Sun Jan 06, 2013 4:25 pm

I am using Mikrotik RouterOS 5.20. I need help with Usermanager

When I click on the name of user having several profiles and expand the ALL PROFILES link, I see the various profiles with their various status like WAITING, ACTIVE, USED and PAUSED.

I understand WAITING, USED and ACTIVE. How does the PAUSE status actually works?

I don't see how I can pause a profile but after some users complain they can't log in, I realize that the problem is as a result of their profile being paused.

How do I resume a paused profile?
Which settings can I change to prevent a profile status from ever going to PAUSED? I am only comfortable with WAITING, ACTIVE or USED?

Thanks in advance for an answer.

How to Interpret User Profile Status "PAUSED"

Sun Feb 03, 2013 3:47 pm

This is an edit of my original slightly inaccurate post.

Form what I can determine:

Whether an added profile appears as 'waiting' or 'paused' depends on whether the profile was set - 'Starts: at first logon' or 'Starts: now' (respectively) in the profiles configuration section of the admin account. (from the customers own management screen only paused profiles seemed to be marked as such)

You can delete a profile by clicking on the red minus sign and you can switch profiles by clicking on the light bulb. When you activate one profile before another has expired, the originally active profile become 'paused' and the waiting profile becomes 'active'. The time seems to be fixed however as described in:

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/User_Manager/Profiles

New profiles seem to be activated in the order listed, however all 'paused' profiles are listed and automatically activated ahead of 'waiting' profiles, even if added later.

Re: How to Interpret User Profile Status "PAUSED"

I have the same question.

I think it works like this (but I am NOT sure)

My profiles are set for a certain amount of data transfer in a 14 day window. The profiles (I have check this) will expire after 14 days OR when the transfer limit is reached. And that works well.

Now like you have said I have a "active" profile, and a few "wating" and maybe 1 "used" on a user account.

Now what I think is happening ( In my case ) is that when the transfer limit is reached BEFORE the expiry days (14) are over the "active" profile gets "paused" (because there are still days left, and a "waiting" profile kicks in and become the "active" profile. I have not tested that in the "lab" (read workshop :D ) but rather avoid it from happening.

Over the past year, to avoid this uncertainty I try not to have any profiles in the "waiting" and once a profile is "used" through transfer or time, I "reset counters" and reload the new profile for the user.

I have yet to come accross clear instructions about UM from MT.

Sorry I do not think that my guessing here contributed to a answer for you. I would like to see what others experienced since I need to learn

I tested what happens with:

profile validity=10m, transfer limitation=10 MB.

If the limitation is reached before the validity expires the profile is 'paused'. After the validity time of 10 minutes expires, the profile changes to 'used'.
