80 miles link only 160 mb throughput

Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:41 am

hello from Mexico...
we have a 80 miles link working abouth a year now , but we want to get more throughput, so i need to know if the TX/RX signal strength value of ch0 -69/-64 means that i have a problem on the antenna side or is that difference acceptable

from old times. the "rule" was. "more than 3db" difference, on the same hardware. something is wrong. Almout everytime aligment. Nowdays, working With 2 Chains, its common to see the difference in signal. That is a behavior comming from having 2 antennas, Close togetner. ITs isolation, spektrum its designed to use etc etc. I have a tought my self, what about the magnetic inner Field, from 2 antennas working together. May it somhow disturb eachoter? (im not that into electromagnetic and antenna design)

To try get more out of Your link. Try to set the freq to what Your antenna is designed to use. Also try to force HT-XX (not always the best giving best result) and like always. algin. algin and then algin one more time. Some time, its better to look at CCQ when algin, than just TX/RX -SNR Levels.

I agree, the difference in received signal on each end probably means that one end is slightly out of alignment. But, I don't know that getting it perfectly aligned will be enough to get you a higher modulation rate.

What size dishes are you using for that much distance?

i use 34 dbi RocketDish-5G34 on both sites so one chanel couldnt be missalined, or the antenna is bad made ?

What radio cards are you using, pigtails how long to antenna, have you rechecked antenna re-alignment, also try moving frequency to check for antenna gain +/-

cards are Dbii f52n (Atheros 11N type) pigtail abouth 1 feet ( 30cm ) plus rf 400 ca. 1foot (40cm) so pretty short 1 conectors thats about 3 dB loss.
And yes we did realign thats when i figured something is wrong, because otherwise: i dont change a running horse
i also checked all the frequencies.... interference on that side is allmost impossible there is no light up the hill :)

interference could com frpm other stuff than wlan. :D But alone way up in some hills, its more likly to have a lot of channels to em self, and much less noice.

cards are Dbii f52n (Atheros 11N type) pigtail about 1 feet ( 30cm ) plus rf 400 ca. 1foot (40cm) so pretty short 1 connectors thats about 3 dB loss.

You can reduce your cable loss by minimizing your cable length using the
following product with your 34 dBi Dish
Purchase a Stationbox S enclosure from RF Elements with 2 x MMCX connectors
(comes with a very short pigtail, clips behind 34 dBi Dish)
Use the supplied short pigtails that come with the Ubnt 34 dBi Dish

Antenna will be the 34 dBi and not as in the image

To test actual loss by using "Rf 400 cable" or any other cable is to simply temporary bypass the lead using a pigtail to antenna connector and check, I have recorded a 5db difference by not using a 1M LMR400 it could be argued maybe bad LMR cable but either way eliminating any “Insertion Loss” item and impedance variation it introduces on the RF load of the radio card is best .

Do you use Nstreme or NV2?

Have you tried replacing the cards, personally I'm not very happy with Dbii quality, also check the spectral scan... on 5GHz there's always interference these days and on 80 miles anything can happen!

and what cards do you use...I think that dbii are best wireless cards for that price...

For the record, in most of countries, if you obey the regulatory domain you won't get 162/162 at 80 miles PtP even on dual chain N cards. :)
I use the HP Mikrotik and Ubiquity dual chains ones with high gain antennas, the bigger the better :) - for that distance.
And on that distance, I wouldn't risk using QAM 64, your link will drop on bad weather.
It always depends on expectations too!

Steven

Am I reading this right? An 80 Mile link with dbii cards and ubnt 34dbi rocket dishes? How is that even possible? Do you mean 8 Miles? This blows my mind....

Are we seeing data rates and not throughput? It would be nice to see a bandwidth test from this link?

With only 48% CCQ (Rx side) what do you expect to see?... :)
It's not easy....Throughput will "suffer" in such a situation.

Need more info but unless I am wrong the numbers don't appear correct?
80miles = 50db SNR = 48% CCQ = 160Mb throughput?

Could it be 8 miles and antenna (s) misaligned?
