Strange problems with new hardware

Wed Mar 01, 2006 10:33 pm

I was doing some lab test, namely, testing realtek 8169 chips on brand new celerons on brand new motherboards, reached 500 Mbps bandwidth, but suddenly on a console I saw this:

(sorry for quality - it is a screen photo) :(
Have anybody ever encountered something like this? I guess it is hardware problem, but no idea where to search. Is it memory, CPU, NIC's I don't know :?:
I will gladly accept any piece of advice! :)

I had similar issue with old linux kernal and some new Intel nics in which a feature was trying to be supported by the driver but wasn't fully compatible with the older kernel. Upgrading the kernel fixed the issue...

take this picture, take auto support output file from your router ftp or create your own (only you must make it on the first logon immediatly after logon) and send it to support@mikrotik.com with situation description

To determin why it is happening we need the support output from this box, please send it to support@mikrotik.com so we could check it.

Got Intel gig cards today, installed them in a place of RTL. And everything worked great! System even pushed up to the 890 Mbit. So, in a conclusion, I should say: people, first, strongly believe manual! in this case it states clearly:
RealTek RTL8169 Gigabit Ethernet (not recommended: may lock up the router)
And second: NEVER EVER USE RTL 8169 chip, you will get no stability.
Just my 2 cen...santims! :D

I think the realtek chips might be getting too hot when you get up to 500Mb/s. Maybe stick the board in a freezer and see if it can go faster -- or add a heatsink with a fan.

I would be interested to hear the results.

Freezer is not usual network testing equipment. :D maybe huge fan near case will be enough? Is MT interested in supout files and screenshots of this accident?

You can just add a heatsink with a fan -- if you don't like the word 'freezer,' then you can call it an 'environmental chamber' (and use the heatsink also).

Screenshots are not so important -- just the test and supout if it fails. A pic of the heatsink and the kind of mounting paste would also be helpful.
